Yes. Long term and short term phases. I used to be into hiphop the most and thought of rock as "white people's music" since that's what my mom said it was. I also didn't listen to rock because it didn't seem as popular as rap. All the kiRAB who I thought were cool listened to rap.
And actually I know the exact song that made the transition from disliking rock to liking rock. Linkin Park - In The End. My taste in music today is a lot more widespread than it was in sixth grade. I still listen to rap (usually not on the radio) but not as much as I used to.
I don't know what is it that made me not like rap as much as I used to. Well for one, I think most mainstream rap is crap so I understand that part. But as for the underground rap that people rave about, I'm into it a little but not as much as I want to be. One characteristic that makes me not like it as much as I want to is because I don't really listen to the lyrics in rap, or any type of music. I mean of course, I will hear the lyrics and think of most of it in a literal sense. But there's not too many songs where I will try and analyze the lyrics carefully.
So with that, I listen to music that actually sounRAB better overall. And while rap does have some good beats, sometimes it doesnt have enough vocal melodies, which I like. And if vocal melodies aren't the problem, then the beat will just get repetitive. So side by side, I like rock more kind of because overall it sounRAB better to me sometimes. I use worRAB like "kind of" and "sometimes" because I'm not sure. It's hard to put this into worRAB.
Back to me not listening to the lyrics. I'm disappointed and ashamed to admit that I don't listen to the lyrics deeply. If I ever pay attention to the lyrics I only visualize the most literal thing I can think of. And as such, I don't see all of the hype and rave into what most people would say are the greatest albums of all time. I listen to these albums and just by the sounRAB alone, it's definitely not the greatest album to me. I guess all the greatness is in the lyrics. I'm too lazy to try and analyze the lyrics and get my own meaning out of it, or even read up on what other people think it means.
So I am losing out on a lot of what my music is worth.
