i swear i could never be with a person who did that for a living. i have this strong belief that unless you desperately need clinincal help for problems, stay FAR away from them. i think they can really cause you to overexam something small and make it a problem. this is just my opinion. im add and i was perscribed ritalin/adderal as a child and at the tender age of 12/13 i decided to stop taking it because i didnt want to feel medicated... best decision ever. now that i know what it is, i think its ****ED UP how they prescribe basically a speed derivative (did i mention its addictive?) to children.... talk about something that is gonna mess you up after taking it for 10 years.

but i do understand there is good things that come out of your field, no hard feelings. wanna hug it out?

well, by your first point there, how are the beatles, frank sinatra, michael jackson, and elvis not above led zep? all four are undoubtedly better, why not?
 
*hugs* Yes, Bob Marley, and the Chili Peppers. I'd say it's improved greatly.
Here are my reasons:
Bob Marley: Truely made Reggae what it is today, I think think the single most important musical figure of the 20th century, in terms of influence.
Yes: Pure Musical virtuosity, and they were pretty groundbreaking with their arrangements. Don't forget to add Rush and King Crimson! Oh, and I forget that Pink Floyd need to get moved up to.
Red Hot Chili Peppers: The first funk band to breakthrough to the mainstream. Not to mention they are all extremely talented, escpecially Michael Balzary(Flea).
 
Grunge, Alternative Rock, Punk and many more have had a greater impact then Rap in the last twenty years. The Hip-hop culture represents a small segment of the population and is very much self contained. Similar to country music it is the extreme on the scale and thus a genre many people dismiss altogether. Look at the lists everywhere else and you'll see both Country and Rap comparatively underrepresented. If your young look at it from my perspective, about 5% of the people I know over 35 (My demographic) are aware of Rap in terms of recognizing artists. 1 in 5 of those like it. With Rap music at this point you are essentially cutting out 60% of the population and therefore it becomes a blip on the radar. It's not about quality it's quantity. Rap Music neeRAB time. Who are the biggest three names in Rap if you asked the general public: Biggie, Pac, Eminem? How does that stack up with Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin in terms of gravitas no?

it is no simple task claiming a TOP 10. so i will say this is a list of 10 artist i believe posses a corabination of features that make them stand out more than the rest.

The Beatles - revolutionized music recording as we know it. their music is very diversified and beautiful. the true syrabol for what a band is. it shows that you dont have to be the most talented single musician in the world, to "come together" with others and make a brilliant artistic sound.

Jimi Hendrix - fused blues and rock, amazingly innovative guitar player. he made the guitar literally an extension of his body, like as if it was his voice; he controlled exactly how it sounded. he was able to literally express himself and whatever sound he wanted through his guitar.

Bob Dylan - wrote some of the most amazing songs in the history of time. his lyrics are pituresue like a monet painting. not only the best folk artist, but the best singer/songwriter of all time. it doesn't get much better than "like a rolling stone" imo.

Johnny Cash - created the image of a rock star, before there was rock. this guy LIVED throughout music business. he preformed in 5 (maybe 6) decades with everybody who was anybody. even in his last days he did some amazing work with rick rubin, his version of "hurt" is ground shaking.

Ludwig Van Beethoven - a man who knew music beyond comprehension. he was one of the first composers to freelance his work. after he became DEAF he went on to produce complex works of musical art... dedication, talent, originality... need this list go on?

The Velvet Underground - their first 4 albums are unbelievable. they were punk before punk and better than any punk that ever came to be. the lyrics are very gripping and grotesquely elegant. truly unconventional and intensely influential in early rock.

Pearl Jam - they have been one of the best live acts for more than 15 years. their music has depth and meaning. they are solid, driven musicians who care about their fans... and thats is what its really all about.

Metallica - you cant mention heavy rock or metal without knowing that these guys do it the best. they have the most original and artistic heavy metal ballaRAB that exist. epic songs like "one" and "the unforgiven" almost make you wanna cry before you punch a whole in the wall. they broke barriers and raised hell. these guys f-ing ROCK.

i realize this is only 8, maybe ill add 2 more later.... but you get the idea

It's odd that we would both like Tool and hate Nickelback and Linkin Park and yet have completely opposite opinions of both Perfect Circle and System. Nickelback drives me nuts.

Its ironic that you think that when considering that their best album was made in 1978.

I love Van Halen, and theres a lot of things that contribute to their appeal. EVH of course is an amazing guitarist, and no one sounded like him at the time. David Lee Roth was a great frontman who could put on a show (f*ck Sammy Hagar).

Like Frances said, showmanship was a big part of it. But unlike most hair metal banRAB, VH actually wrote good songs, and a lot of them.
