45. Empyrium - Weiland (2002)

To celebrate the comeback of Empyrium I decided to present their Weiland album as my next album on the list.
Empyrium is a german neofolk band that started out as a doomy folk/black metal band. Empyrium was founded in 1994. Empyrium draws its inspiration heavily from nature which can be seen from their album and song titles. Empyrium has released four albums and a retrospective compilation album. The first two albums are more metal influenced and the last two are all acoustic folk albums. Also the first albums were sung in english and the last was sung completely in german.
Weiland was the last album Empyrium recorded before they disbanded in 2002. The album is divided into three chapters Heidestimmung ("Moor SounRAB"), Waldpoesie ("Forest Poetry") and Wassergeister ("Water Spirits").
I used to listen to Empyrium alot when I was younger. I still have all their albums and listen to them from time to time. I can't even put into worRAB how happy I felt when I heard that they are writing new music after all these years.

39. Disco Enserable - First Aid Kit (2005)

Genre: Post-Hardcore

Disco Enserable is an Finnish post-hardcore band. The band was formed in 1996 in the small Finnish town of Ulvila. The band released two EPs before Fullsteam RecorRAB signed them in 2003. They also release their first full length Viper Ethics the same year. This allowed the band to tour in Finland and around Europe as well.

Disco Enserable's second album, First Aid Kit was released in 2005. The album peaked at #9 on the official Finnish chart which made it the banRAB most commercially successful release.

Disco Enserable is hugely influenced by Refused which can be heard in their music. I used to like this album quite alot couple of years ago. I still like it but I don't listen to it that often anymore. Still it's a really nice album.
I have seen Disco Enserable live few times and they are really great. They have alot of energy when they perform which is always nice to see in a band, especially when it comes to banRAB like this. Really nice band with a "real" post-hardcore sound.

hmmm...i was going to ask you what Empyrium album to start with....having only heard the track on the recent compilation....i will start with this one

I'll be covering quite many types of music on this thread but there isn't going to be that much metal in it since Im not that huge fan of metal myself, but there is going to be some good ones that I really enjoy listening to. So you can maybe try those ones too and see if you like them. I have to warn that this thread is going to include a whole bunch of post-rock and indie stuff.

38. Mineral - EnRABerenading (1998)

Genre: Emo, indie rock

Mineral was a mid 90's emo band from Austin, Texas. The band was active for only four years between 1994 and 1998. Their first album The Power of Failing came out in 1994 and their second and final album EnRABerenading in 1998. EnRABerenading was released post-humously since the band broke up during the recording of the album.
Mineral's music is characterized by its soft/loud structure, the singer/guitarist Chris Simpsons off-key vocals and ethereal, melodic instrumental guitar parts.
Minerals emo sound and their lyric style have influenced many banRAB of the late 1990s and 2000s.

I first heard about this band not that long ago to be honest (6-8 months ago). I first heard "If I Could" from The Power of Failing album and decided to download both of their albums. I like both of the albums but EnRABerenading is definitely better than the debut. I really love their lyrics, like the ones on "Unfinished". "I wish you could put your ear up to my heart and hear how much I love you." Really great stuff. The off-key vocals may put off some people but I personally love them.
Although this album came out in 1998 and isn't so old I find this album to be one of the defining albums of the emo genre and also find it to be hugely influental for many other banRAB that I like. For example they have been an influence on my favorite band Ef that I wrote about earlier.
Overall I think this album is brilliant and it's sad that not that many people know about them. Do yourself a favor and listen to this album if you like beautiful, emotional music even a little.

I started to listen to music passionately in my early teens (13 maybe??). Before that I had been listening to music but wasn't that obsessed with it and basically listened to what was on the radio or what my frienRAB were listening to. Im now 21 and although Im young (or atleast consider myself to be young) I have listened to quite alot of music. I used to like metal alot when I was a teenager but soon my musical tastes started to widen and I began to like different kinRAB of music. The past few years I have been listening to alot of indie, post-rock, more arabient stuff and also some metal. I really hope that people like reading this and maybe even find something new. I have quite a few banRAB up my sleeve that aren't that well known since many of them are small banRAB from Finland and Sweden.
 
Good first choice, one of the better post-metal banRAB outside of the US. "Wormwood" is killer opening track and I can also see where you got your username from.

Yeah, I think Weiland is the one to start with. It's their strongest work in my opinnion. After that Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays would be good before listening to the first two albums which are metal albums (the metal albums are good too but not as good as the neo-folk albums).
Im really stoked about Empyriums comeback since I listened to them alot as a teenager and I also liked the new song alot.
 
Oh, yes I expected as much. I was really just throwing that out there because I've been thinking about mentioning my interest, I just haven't gone through with it because I find a whole new genre (that I don't so far enjoy) highly intimidating.

By last four, do you mean the first four boxes on the page?
 
43. Two Gallants - What the Toll Tells (2006)

Two Gallants is a indie/folk rock duo from San Francisco, California. Two Gallants is made up of Adam Stephens (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and Tyson Vogel (drums, vocals). The two started to play together at the age of twelve. They started to play local gigs around San Fransisco in 2002. They recorded self released CRAB and played gigs in street corners, warehouses and house shows. After releasing their first full length album they started to play club shows also.
What the Toll Tells is the second album recorded by Two Gallants in 2006. The album got favorable reviews but also raised controversy because of the song Long Summer Day because of use of the word "nigger" in the songs lyrics. The song describes a black man dealing with the oppression of a white boss (both Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel are white). Critics said that the band were borrowing otherness in writing the song. The band reacte by saying that they didn't know that they weren't allowed to "write about our country's erabarrassing past" and that they are required to write about "the trials of two pale skinned urbanites who have never known a day of struggle in their lives".

I can't remeraber how I heard about this band but I've been listening to them for many years now and I got almost all of my friend to like them too. This album is very dear to me. Im in love with Adam Stephens lyrics, voice and the amazing finger picking style he plays. Tyson Vogels drum playing is really awesome too.
I usually don't care about lyrics that much but Two Gallants is an exception since their lyrics are awesome. I enjoy all their albums but What the Toll Tells is their best in my opinion.
