Agree that Titanic is overrated, as is Dirty Dancing IMO.
I'm not sure if it was really hyped up, but I found Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind a bit rubbish after being told so many times to watch it.
 
I agree with that. Mostly it's just to indulge middle aged men in the sad fantasy that they're still attractive to young women. And for much the same reason, As Good as it Gets. :rolleyes:
 
Have to apologise for including the other Bill Murray film as it was so pants it wouldn't even have been rated at all, would like to substitute Gladiator. Soz!
 
Apolocalypse Now - I just don't get it.
A Clockwork Orange - Boring, unrealistic, pathetic.
Rear Window - Boring, and nothing special at all.
There Will Be Blood - Daniel Day Lewis tossing off. A nothing film.
The History Boys - Probably the worst film I've seen in the last five years.
 
Being a movie buff for the past 55 years, I was surprised to see many oldie classics deemed as overated such as Casablanca, King Kong, and even Once Upon A Time In America.

Of course, human we are, we cannot possibly like the same films all of the time.

But, I do recall a few years back about a Bruce Willis film which was deemed to be sensational at the time. When I saw it, I was sooooooooooo dissapointed :(:(:(

For me it was drivel, and totally predictable.

The Sixth Sense :D:D:D

A complete waste of valuable time.
 
1. Godfather. The stand out winner for me. Mainly because best movie ever countdowns interview talking heaRAB, and other countdowns interview "blokes", so it gets rolled out as the best movie ever because they remember enjoying it when they last watched it - 25 years ago when they were 8. When you watch it now you realise nothing really happens. Then there is the stellar performance of Pacino. Evidenced by his apparent genius as he gurns like a spaz in the restaurant scene.

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Pretty and stylish in places but another movie where absolutely nothing happens until it fizzles out in another 60's standard with a psychadelic sequence. replaced Blade Runner as the worst scifi movie ever made for me when I saw it and managed to stay awake all the way until the end for the first time.

3. Blade Runner: Any cut. It's just dull. Nothing happens. The cuts just mean nothing happens for a bit longer.

4. A Clockwork Orange. Presumably it was banned/censored to protect people from wasting their money going to see this nonsense. More of that late 60's/early 70's psychadelia to distract from nothing much happening.

5. The Player. A brilliant satire on Hollywood. This is where I learned that satire means funny to the mates of the chap that wrote it. Dull as ditchwater to everyone else.

The Blair Witch Project. I always forget about this. Quite simply the worst movie ever made.
 
1) The Dark Knight - I find comic book hero movies incredibly dull anyway so I thought the film was nothing special and the excessive praise it got was totally undeserving.

2) Lord Of The Rings - why is this considered "cool"? Sure the fight sequences blah blah blah but it's far too long to be taken seriously, they must film it in real time.

3) Harry Potter 1+2+3+4+5 - okay for kiRAB but it annoys me immensely that fully grown adults are so into it. Plus I hate the hype around it "OMFG!!!...harry gets his first kiss in this film!!!" So what? Unless you thought he was gonna remain celibate forever or you've never seen two people kiss what's the big deal :confused:

4) Atonement - wooden acting from Keira Knightely and the plot was just not gripping enough. I was forcing myself to sit on the sofa near the end of the film.

5) Brokeback Mountain - never before have I seen such an average film get so much praise. The controversial subject was the main reason it got it so much critical success IMO.
 
Casablanca takes time to weave its magic I think.

The first time I saw it twenty odd years ago my reaction was meh.

Now I love it & even went out of my way to catch it on the big screen in a digital print.
 
Kane is a work of genius IMO and a very engrossing film, as is Cassablanca. Gangs of New York was also an excellent film IMO. Lost In Translation was great. And how can ANYONE not like Rear Window????? I loved Sideways as well.

Anyway, my nominations (off the top of my head) would be

It's A Wonderful Life - dull and depressing and a bit preachy and patronising.
The Shawshank Redemption - it's ok-ish, but not the classic that everyone insists it is.
Apocalypse Now - horrible film
There Will Be Blood - ok-ish again, but why all the oscar nominations?
No Country for Old Men - a horrible piece of film-making. How could they have made such a potentially good story so dull? The whole of Tommy Lee Jones' part could have been cut from the film - the character didn't seem to be at all interested in what was going on (audience could identify with him on that point maybe!) and to kill off the main character off-screen was a bit mean to say the least.

Nothing happens in Blade Runner ????? Or 2001??? or A Clockwork Orange??? What???

I agree with leaby about Finding nemo. I loved nearly all the other Pixar films but there's something about that one that just doesn't click. I don't know why it's always hailed as the peak of their achievements.
 
Most replies here are all opinion based. You can't really say that your opinion is fact. Hence films are rated on statistics so what you might say is a bad film. Might be an amazing film to others.

I like every film I have seen. I don't love but like every film I have seen. Because If I knew I wouldn't like it. I wouldn't go to see it or buy it. For that reason I can't really give an opinion on any over-rated film.

My top 5?

1. Pans Labyrinth - ok, not a bad film but certainly not the masterpiece that it's made out to be.

2. No Country For Old Men - the first half was so-so, after that it spirals down the pan quite dramatically.

3. Gangs of New York - personally, I thought it was trash.

4. Sideways - everyone on here knows how much I hate Sideways already so I won't go over it again but what narks me most is Payne directed one of my all time favourite films (Election) and then went on to give us this crap and lets not forget his other master-class in smugness 'About Shit (sorry, Schmidt)'.

5. Mama Mia - I can't understand it's appeal. Bad acting, even worse singing, yet people love it. :confused:
 
I can't think of five at the moment but would have to defiantly say that The Dark Knight was far too overrated.
I saw it the day it came out, it was enjoyable, it was better than the average superhero movie but at the end of the day it was a superhero movie.
On acting alone, Ledger was incredible, every time he was screen I was lost for worRAB but unfortunately, for most people and the media his death overshadowed the acting and anything was assumed... this film was amazing, there is a taboo shrouding this film... you have to see it.
Then there was all the things about producers thinking about editing because it was distasteful to Ledger... this was just another way to drum up the media and it worked.
People were saying this could be one of the best films ever... no where near in my world... but on acting, despite alive or dead, Ledger's acting of the Joker was brilliant- I know some won't agree but he made the film for me...
Not my favourite film of 2008... I much preferred Burn After Reading... much much more... which was underrated because people said... amazing directors... amazing cast... what the hell went wrong with the film? I don't get those people... it was amazing :D
