Top 100 Guitarist songs

Terrible list.

The fact that "Seven Nation Army" is in the top 25 makes me giggle.

I taught this "great guitar" song to my 10 year old brother and it took him a single day to play it

I think you're right. We shouldn't let people with a genuine interest in a band ever make a comment about them.

Only those who don't care about an act can really judge, with the clarity of distance both emotional and physical, how a band, or more specifically their guitar rifts are.

Well said.

It's only memorable to Dream Theater fans.

Look at that list , it's got some of the most well known songs ever written no Dream Theater song could compare to any of them. Most people wouldn't know a Dream Theater tune if it bit them on the arse.

who said i was hating? i aint no hater, im just saying maybe u need to find a hobby. but the list was unnecessary i mean we've all seen enough of rolling stones lists to know, they but the same tired **** on there

No I mean it should be on the list, Just not so high...Maybe late 20's would be resonable. I mean I love Nirvana but there were better riRAB that deserve that 10 spot.

my bad hehe

sorting the list numerically is pretty tough though. especially once you get near the top. i guess it depenRAB on the criteria you use to select the tunes in the first place. i really couldn't see myself dropping SLTS much if i had to compile my own list.

Popularity arguments are kinda pointless and don't go anywhere.

You gotta remeraber this is Rolling Stone, they know jack sh*t about guitar and they're insanely biased towarRAB their musical preferences when making these lists. Just liking a song is all they need to call it a great guitar song.

Btw. I'm currently making a rock guitarists list for my blog. I made one a long time ago but it was pretty horrible.

Typical Rolling Stone list, hit and miss. My two cents.

98) Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under The Bridge"

Love the song, such a simple guitar part though, and theres a lot of RHCP songs that make better examples of Frusciantes talent. Scar Tissue or Californication would have been a better choice.

96) Husker Du - "New Day Rising"

Are you kidding me? One of the weakest songs on the album, just a few feedback covered notes and repetitive chanting, I don't see any real guitar genius in that.

87) King Crimson - "Red"

21st Century Schizoid Man and Fallen Angel would have been better choices, but hey I can't complain.

83) Sublime - "What I Got"

Hahahahahahaha, what?

81) Michael Jackson - "Beat It"

It's a great pop song and a great riff, so why not? Certainly wasn't usual for an R&B/Soul singer to do a song with a hard rock riff and a heavy metal guitar solo.

70) Smashing Pumpkins - "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"

Of all the Smashing Pumpkins songs, they pick this one? Is this nothing more than a popularity contest?

69) Pink Floyd - "Money"

Its a sweet solo, but Gilmours best guitar song? No way, not even close.

39) Santana - "Black Magic Women"
46) **** Dale And The Del-Tones - "Miserlou"
49) Jimi Hendrix - "Machine Gun"
51) Ozzy Osbourne - "Crazy Train"
55) Cream - "White Room"
57) Grateful Dead - "Dark Star"
58) Link Wray - "Rurable"
59) Jeff Beck - "Freeway Jam"
60) Funkadelic - "Maggot Brain"
75) Frank Zappa - "Willie The Pimp"

These should all be higher.

48) The Clash - "London Calling"

Great song, but no.

36) Pink Floyd - "Interstellar Overdrive"

Astronomy Domine is a better choice.

32) Dire Straits - "Sultans Of Swing"

Well they got this one right, that solo is divine.

24) Rage Against The Machine - "Killing In The Name"

Great choice, it should be here, but nowhere near this high.

21) The White Stripes - "Seven Nation Army"

No way no way no way.

Sure its a hot song, but c'mon, it's just a ridiculously simple riff repeated into oblivion, it's the whole damn song.

18) Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop"

And it was such a great riff they kept using it over and over.

15) The Who - "My Generation"

The Live at leeRAB performance alone is top 10 worthy.

11) Led Zeppelin - "Whole Lotta Love"
8) Led Zeppelin - "Stairway To Heaven"

Theres god knows how many Zep songs that are more deserving. Dazed & Confused, Heartbreaker, Since I've Been Lovin' You and Song Remains the Same are all better choices.

10) Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

I love Nirvana, but hell f*cking no.

7) The Beatles - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

Great choice, I could see this being top 10. My favorite Clapton solo.

6) Van Halen - "Eruption"

Laugh all you want, it's one of the most influencial guitar solos ever, so yeah it deserves to be top 10.

5) The Rolling Stones - "Brown Sugar"

I always thought this was a dull riff, dosen't excite me at all. Where in the hell is Satisfaction?

4) The Kinks - "You Really Got Me"

Great choice, but not this high.

2) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Purple Haze"

Meh, a lot of better choices IMO. Voodoo Chile, All Along the Watchtower, Little Wing, Third Stone From the Sun.

1) Chuck Berry - "Johnny B. Goode"

Sure why not?

The RS bias is on full display, over emphasis old blues, and ancient rock n rollers and R&B acts, as well as some current trendies at the expense of excluding hard rock and metal. I like the rockibilly and surf selections, but if you're going to include **** Dale and Link Wray, who were the shredders of their era, why not Satriani and Vai? Below is a little swapping around:

1) Megadeth - Hanger 18 / Chuck Berry - "Johnny B. Goode" Megadeth, the mother of all guitar banRAB, and this is the mother of all guitar songs.

6) UFO - Rock Bottom / Van Halen - "Eruption" This isn't a song.

9) The Allman Brothers Band - "Whipping Post" / "The Allman Brothers Band - "Statesboro Blues" Fillmore East version of "Whipping Post" is the definitive Bros.

14) Lou Reed - The Blue Mask / Born To Run - "Bruce Springsteen" Great tune, but this is not a guitar song, just ask Clarence Clemmons.

17) Black Sabbath - "Supernaut" / Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" I admit it..I'm a "Supernaut" junkie.

18) The Clash - Complete Control / Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop" Mick Jones was the greatest punk 6 stringer

19) Mountain - Mississippi Queen / Prince And The Revolution - "Purple Rain" How much did WB pay for this plug? Nice looking guitar, though. Leslie West was the fattest guitar player...sound wise.

20) Ted Nugent - Stranglehold / The Impressions - "People Get Ready" Give me a break Let's try some Nugent, instead.

26) Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned / B.B. King - "How Blue Can You Get?" I hate to do this, but the English were better blues rocker.

28) Echo and the Bunneymen - With a Hip / U2 - "Where The Streets Have No Name" Good song, but this is an anthem! Will Sargent played tense and psychedelic.

30) BOC - Godzilla / Bill Haley And His Comets - "(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" Good to know for history class, but Buck Dharma would eat Haley's guitarist for breakfast and crap him out in 5 minutes.

31) Queen - Stone Cold Fever / Queen - "Keep Yourself Alive" Thrash before it existed.

35) The Stooges - Loose / The Stooges - "1969" Too tentative. The Stooges really let loose on Fun House.

44) Faith no More - War Pigs / sleater-Kinney - "Dig Me Out" I know it's a cover, but what a cover!

45) Band of Gypsies - Power of Love / The Beatles - "I Saw Her Standing There" Three Beatle songs, and three Jimi songs. I'm breaking the tie.

60) Janes Addiction - Pigs in Zen / Funkadelic - "Maggot Brain" Eddie Hazel was good, but when David Navarro caught fire, as he does here, he torches the house down.

61) Montrose - Rock Candy / Sam And Dave - "Soul Man". A choice only the RS editorial board could understand. Ronnie Montrose, vastly under-rated

62) Foghat - I Just Want to Make Love to You / Albert King - "Born Under A Bad Sign" What can I say, I like the English boogie blues better.

65) Yes - Siberian Khatru / The Police - "Message In A Bottle" Not as substantial as Steve Howes work.

68) Bad Company - Deal With the Preacher / B.B. King - "The Thrill Is Gone" Need I explain. Mick Ralphs, classy and knew when to move in for the kill.

69) Boris - Rattlesnake / Pink Floyd - "Money" What were these guys smoking. No dosing off when Boris plays.

71) Deep Purple - "Smoke on the Water" / The Strokes - "Take It Or Leave It" The reason why I didn't include this earlier is because I assumed it was in the list? If I didn't want to be so iconclastic, I'd go with "Highway Star".

72) Motorhead - Ace of Spades / Weezer - "Say It Ain't So" This stomps Weezer.

78) Black Label Society - All For You / Buddy Guy - "Stone Crazy" Another old blues guys, this time replaced by a southern fried doom guy. 2nd fattest sound next to Leslie West.

80) Gang of Four - To Hell w/ Poverty / Steely Dan - "Kid Charlemagne" I don't recall this being a guitar song?

81) Michael Jackson - "Beat It" I wanted to get rid of this but thanks to Eddie, it's catchy.

84) Melvins - Revolve / John Mayer - "Gravity" RS pandering to a new generation of subscribers. Man these new kiRAB are sooo un-hip.

85) Hot Tuna - Funky #7 / Phish - "You Enjoy Myself" Ahh, Trey...if you want to know what jamming is all about you should have been listening to Jorma and not so much Jerry.

87) King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man / King Crimson - "Red" Not adventerous enough...KC by the nurabers. 21 st was the beginning of Metal, but RS doesn't want you to know that since they don't cover it.

89) Scorpions - Speedy's Coming / Joan Jett And The Blackhearts - "I Love Rock N' Roll" Classic Scorps. Speed metal, before it existed.

92) Kiss - "Strutter"/ Mick Jagger - "Memo From Turner" The snobs at RS thought on this..."Pick an alleged guitar song few people have heard from a famous singer. People will think we're brilliant, right?" Not really. "Performance" was a great movie but this song sucks! Another stretch, by RS leaRAB to my replacement, KISS ( Keep It Simple, Stupid)

94) Aerosmith - Nobody's Fault / Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing" Rolling Stones (the band) rip-off

97) QOTSA - Song For the Deaf / Queens Of The Stoneage - No One Knows" How could they choose this over that?

98) Red Hot Chilli Peppers - If You Have to Ask / Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under The Bridge" Futher proof RS don't know what the fook they talkin about.

99) Velvet Underground - Sister Ray / My Mourning Jacket - "Run Thru" How could you not include Sister Ray?

Bonus Track: The Cult - Love Removal Machine

In there defense, thats a pretty damn hard list to make. Although you are correct they could have definitely done a better job.

Those are some fair points and I like a lot of the songs you bring up, but your bias is just as clear as Rolling Stone's and that is the problem when evaluating a list like this.
