Toonzone Talkback - John K. to Offer Cartooning Class

Even though I have many disagreements with John. K opinions in the world of animation, but I'll admit he's a great animator. So him doing this, isn't a bad idea. Hope it goes well.
 
This news intriges me.

I really should get some training in. Especially if I'm going to make an aimated series (not that my designs are horrid, unless they're intentional or my early work that is).
 
I always thought John Kricfalusi had a good grasp on drawing. Even though I don't think I'll ever animate anything, I've learned a lot from his blog posts on drawing. It's good to know he'll focus on that some more.
 
Seems a bit pricier than courses at the animation schools that he feels are "criminal institutions" (don't know how much a animation course at Cal Arts or Sheridan costs, but the average RISD course is quite cheaper than $1200).
 
Yea, for that kinda money you could get a car, and why does he charge so much? He was something but once he left R and S he didn't do much that was noteworthy.

It's a real shame, too. If only he had learned to compromise a bit, he could have made a huge impact on the industry.

There's a moral here.
 
Hearing John on commentaries constantly talking about how he changed animation is enough to turn me off. I don't think I would ever want to sit through weeks of something like that in person and pay to do it.
 
I dunno, you guys, I think this is a good idea. It gives John K. AND his loyal fans something productive to do instead of spewing vitrol about today's cartoons. I really don't see how that's anything other than a positive. Both sides are taking action. And like him or not, John K. does have a knowledge about cartooning, so why not pass it down to up-and-coming artists? Yeah, I know, he already gives lessons for free on his blog, but that type of teaching method can only go so far.

My only question is, would "graduating" from this course mean anything? Like, would you be able to use it like a diploma in applying for an animation-related job? Or would it just be something to enhance your skills but you'd still have to attend a "real" college to be taken seriously for any kind of employment?
 
I'm just think that it might be one of those things you do to better your skills, but still have to attend a "real class" at college. Unless he's offering some sort of diploma or at least a college credit for participating in his class, I still think you need the college background to get farther. I thought that John K. class would be similar to what my local library offers for art classes, just something you take to better your skills at.

Though I do agree that this gives John K. and his followers something to do. At least this is more productive than ranting on a blog.
 
Studios look at demo reels, not diplomas. They couldn't care less if you get a degree in animation. If your reel sucks, your diploma means nothing and that $100,000 spent at the big art school goes down the drain.

Really, getting a degree in animation does not mean crap unless you want to teach.
If you don't want to teach it's better to go to something like Animation Mentor where they teach you the skills necessary to get a job in animation.
