I'm actually glad that Higurashi received a positive review. Curiously enough, however, for all of the violence and gore I was able to bear it without any particular problems. But something like Saw? Forget about it. I suppose certain things are a lot less disgusting to see in animated form, even though they still remain incredibly creepy and even occasionally shocking.
It's also interesting to note that the musical score for the series, both seasons included, has what seems to be considered as one of Kenji Kawai's weaker efforts according to certain fan circles, but like the reviewer I was also able to appreciate it in time.
The script does have a few inconsistencies and irritating issues, mind you, but that's why the follow-up is so important. I've mentioned at least a couple of times that the sequel series is something of a different beast, yes, but in retrospect that was precisely what made the whole experience a lot more worthwhile for me instead of just something worth dragging out every Halloween.
Speaking of the visual novels...I definitely want to buy those too, provided that the price isn't insane.
