This is the talkback thread for "Welcome To The NHK": And Welcome to Your Sad, Pitiful Life.

Shock therapy for the shut-in. The episodes where Sato becomes addicted to RPGs were particularly scary. Great ending, though.

Only seen an episode of the anime, but I read the original book... Scared me straight, it did. What a disturbing piece of literature. The first episode seems to be fairly faithful at times, if not understandably watered down a bit.

See, I can see why anime like this gets made due to the hikikomori trend in Japan, but I have a hard time working up the interest to see it because I can't relate to the subject matter. When I saw episodes of Genshiken I found the excesses of its characters amusing, but while I get the point of it and its ilk it wasn't anything new to me either--enjoy your hobbies but don't let them rule your life. Okay, fair enough, but that's nothing I didn't already know. Though, I do respect that this is a message that a lot of people do need. And given that that's the case, why not get the point across with a solid cartoon they might actually watch?

NHK is a pretty good anime, but the book is fantastic. It's like some fever dream fusion of Catcher in the Rye and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.

Sad thing is I can identify with PARTS of this anime in terms of making bad decisions, dependecy on family, and general procrastinating at key things in life but I have a friend who is EXACTLY like the main character. Actually I should say "former" friend since I got sick of him in the middle of last year.

Annnnnyway.....

The anime starts off very strong but I think it gets a little watered down compared to the manga, but then again the manga makes the later half of Evangelion look like a happy walk in the park. I actually think Grave of the Fireflies is less tragic than some of the stuff that happens in the manga.

O-chan

Sadly, I'm at home most of the time, and I can kinda relate to Sato.....

With that aside, I liked Welcome to the NHK, the anime, the novel, and the manga, and I found them to be absolutely hilarious!!

I saw about the first 6 or so episodes on OnDemand a year or so ago, and it was pretty good. It was creepy how freaking cartoons, drawings, can cause a person to lose touch with the real world.
