No April Fools stories from the News team this year. This review is the closest we came to doing something jokey.

That bear is going to be in my nightmares now. Those bargain DVD do have some gems in them, you just have to look. I think my college prof. for my History of Animation class uses some of them for the older cartoons that haven't gotten the Disney/WB treatment.

I would like to point out BTW (no April Fooling), that Dot and the Whale is part of a series of Austrailian movies that were see on American TV "many moons ago" that began with Dot and the Kangaroo. I don't know if you've heard of Yoram Gross films, but the movies came from them, and believe you me, If I got any of these movies, I would treasure them like a bar of solid gold. It's been ages since I saw them, but I can tell you, they were very well made.

A couple things. As bad as the quality on these things are, I can't knock them. After all, I found a copy of Asterix and Cleopatra years ago for a dollar. Not it's selling online for 40! Of course I also bought a DVD of "Wacky and Packy", a Filmation cartoon series that I feel is best left forgotten.

I tend to avoid the animes they release now. They pretty much equal only using them as part of "Bad Anime" pannel at a convention (I wouldn't be surprised if someone knows the specifics of what I'm talking about).

And lastly...

What is the title of this one that had a Zagreb and Hubley shorts in it? That is a must have for me. Much as I love classic unPC Looney Tunes, seeing animation artisans like that on a kid's throw a way release is amazing.

Is that an April Fool? If it was released on DVD, wouldn't Entertainment Rights know about it (they own most of the Filmation catalog)?

UPDATE: I saw "Wacky and Packy" DVDs on Amazon, but is it the same Wacky and Packy that Filmation made? It looks kind of dubious to me...

It is. Sadly, it's really really real. I'm holding it as we speak. I tried watching them, and I think I spent way too much on a drink Coaster. It's definately Filmation's Wacky and Packy alright. I was hoping it would have had MUSH or some parts of Uncle Crock's Block on it, but it's just those cartoons. And you have to watch the cartoons all at once in succesion. It was maid by a company called east west DVD. It's a pretty shakey company... the website is "under construction"

But clearly the copyright or something expired, so they were able to use them.

I remember getting "Panda and the Magic Serpent" on one of these DVDs, an anime film from 1958 animated by Toei. The print was scratchy and was missing shots here and there, but the only way to see this film in the US.

Dot and the Whale? Dude, I still remember the villain from that flick! And the end of his little song. "I know all-a 'bout whales!"

Dude, those DVDs by East-West entertainment can be found at your local dollar store, not just at Wal-Mart. ;) At my local DOLLARAMA, they have tons of these DVDs for pickup for a dollar. However, while some of the stuff they have on these discs are public domain, there are others that are still under license by their respective rights holders. I saw one "cartoon world" disc that had Hey Arnold! on it. I wonder if it is a matter of time before Nickelodeon or any other company will bust their ass?

I've been wondering if those Kimba the White Lion episodes Maxie Zeus reviewed are in violation of copyright or not. After all, RightStuf released their own set of DVDs, which they had to get permission from Japan to release.
