Toon Zone Talkback - "The Smurfs" Trailer Online

That's what I hate about seeing animated/family movies at the theater...you always have to suffer through at least three or four really terrible kiddie-movie trailers. :mad: Kind of like how I was stuck watching the Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel trailer when I went to see The Princess & The Frog. And you can't even heckle the trailer appropriately, because of all the innocent kiddies around you. :shrug:

The CGI-animated family comedy movie has become something of a genre in and of itself, and Smurfs looks like it's fulfilling all of the requirements:

1. Take a beloved franchise and make a whole bunch of unnecessary changes to it, thus ticking off off the fans of said so they'll complain about their childhoods being ruined? Check.

2. Insert a "cool" rock song in the trailer? Check.

3. Have a scene in which the main characters are seen clinging for dear life onto some fast-moving thing at top speed while screaming? Check.

4. Employ big name actors to do the voices? Check.

5. Pepper the trailer with a groan-worthy catchphrase? Big check.

Now we just have to wait for the full trailer to see what other cliches they cover. I'm placing my bets that the film ends with the cast rocking out to some other contemporary rock music number. It's practically a requirement for CGI family movies.
 
Hell, Family Guy did an entire cutaway segment based around this very concept ("Smurfette started Smurfing me right in the Smurfing parking lot" ~ "No Smurfing way!"). Some people think this is hilarious. :sad:

And it's worse when it's a film aimed at five-year-olds, when you have to listen to kids running around screaming inappropriate things like "MUNK YOURSELF!!!" and "BOW-CHIKKA-WOW-WOW!" over and over while their indulgent parents coo over "how cute" it is. :mad:
 
Don't forget the 'Smurf' related skits from 'Robot Chicken'. (Which featured the actual voice actor for Brainy Smurf, Danny Goldman.) Anywho, 'Family Guy', and 'Robot Chicken's little jabs at 'The Smurfs' were obviously skewed more towards their target adult audience who might have grown up with them when they were kids. Now for an actual straight up 'Smurf' movie, injecting that kind of irreverent humor is very questionable. I would assume that the marketers wanted their trailer to 'get some attention' as it were, but this might be taking it a bit too far.If most parents were smart, they might want to reconsider what they might precieve as 'cute'. In the words of Mr. Hollywood, 'Well ain't that cute, BUT IT'S WROOOOOOOOOOOOONG!'We all know who to thank for that, right John K.? :shame:
 
Am I a bad person for wanting to see this?

I mean, it looks like crap, all the director's other movies such, and I know it'll probably be horrible, but that cast! Neil Patrick Harris! Hank Azaria! Sophia Vergara! Alan Cumming! Tim Gunn! Quentin Tarantino! PEE-WEE HERMAN! Just replace Kate Perry with, I dunno, Lady Gaga or someone else more fun and less annoying and you arguably have the best star ensemble since, I dunno, Sweeney Todd (which, according to a USA Today article, was actually an influence on this movie in some manner). So yeah, unless it turns out the Smurfs eat each other's fecal matter or there's an annoying racist sidekick "Ghetto Smurf" we haven't heard about it or the film climaxes with Smurfette singing "You're So Gay And You Don't Even Like Boys", then I will be in the theater opening weekend. At a 2D matinee, of course; don't want to spend too much money on this. So if I'm all depressed and self-loathing the week after it comes out, you'll know why...

That reminds me, I heard that the Marmaduke movie ends with him farting and winking at the camera. I am honestly surprised that movie tanked:shrug:
 
Well, the Smurfs themselves look pretty well in CGI. It doesn't feel as odd to me as seeing Alvin and the Chipmunks in their various trailers and commercials. I thought that they went overboard with turning some areas blue though. I actually didn't pick up how their catchphrases were not really subtitle versions of inappropriate expressions, but I tend to not pick up on obvious things like that right away.

It doesn't really strike me as a bad movie, but not knowing what the plot is helps with that. The trailer just leaves a weird impression on me, especially when they were trying to hype it up by turning everything blue.
 
Hi, I'm John D. Timmons son Marcus. And I just want to let you TZers know that my beloved father had suddenly collapsed while watching that Smurfs trailer. He said the characters looked good, but everything else was trash.
 
After seeing the trailer, I now kinda wish that Wendy Testaburger was a real person, so that way she'd put a stop to this film the same way she destroyed Smurf Village.
 
Wow! Am i really the only Smurfs fan that cant wait for this movie to come out? I think this is going to be great!:D Im seeing this opening day for sure. Who cares if they are updating it. Now my daughter can enjoy our Smurfs cartoonn dvd and this movie when she grows up.:proud:
 
Me too. I got the "smurf happens" one, but I didn't notice "get Smurfed" and "Munk yourself" as being bad. I thought that they meant something like "become a fan of smurfs/munks".
 
This film creeps me out.
At least Scooby-Doo tried a little with there live action films :shrug:
Maybe they'll have Alvin crossover with the Smurfs.
