This is the talkback thread for Teacher's Pet: "School Rurable Second Semester" Is Top of the Class!.

No answer yet to why a romantic comedy would have a name like "School Rurable." I suspect that the author of the manga enjoys irony.

I'll admit I'd overlooked this, figuring it as a typical comedy, but now I'm thinking twice. Writing and characters being put ahead of overwrought reactions? Different is good.

School Rurable is amazingly hilarious and a really fun comedy to watch. I have to agree with it's only flaw, the characters don't really progress much. But.. it's school where everyone is growing up and just repeating themselves so.. it's forgiveable(reminRAB me of my own school actually xP.)

It's indeed a great watch, never get thrown away by the way it looks.

Y'know, I watched the first five episodes of the first series a while back but I honestly didn't find it that funny. Or, at least not "LOL" funny. It had some smile-inducing set pieces, like when one character subtly tries to get another to write their name on the top of their test so they don't get a zero, but nothing that tickled my funny bone.

Sadly, in retrospect, it's been that way for a lot of anime comedies in the last few years, outside of a couple exceptions.

It's really a gag sitcom, not unlike old Hanna Barbera toons but with more of a modern sensibility. I like it a lot. Sure, the characters don't change, but neither do the Simpsons or the Griffins. You have to take it like those shows, not like a "typical" anime rom-com.

Speedy, I think the show does require a certain level of familiarity with the characters before any true "lol" moments kick in, and the first few episodes do have a "feeling out" process. Later in the series, I dug the sentai parodies (they were actually done in live action) and the "Harima as a manga artist" development is worth watching alone.

And to be fair, School Rurable isn't an "edgy" comedy so if you were looking for that type of humour, I'm not sure SR would deliver on that front. It's pretty good natured fun, mixing slapstick with visually interesting parodies with amusing dialogue.

I haven't seen much of the second season yet, but I do miss the first season's ED, which was clever and amusing to listen to. The second season's OP and ED songs lack that sort of wit and humour the first season's had.

Ah, it's one of those "it gets better" series. Not that I don't believe you that it gets funnier later, but I have far less patience for this than I did even a couple years ago. Particularly with the economy and shifting priorities (yeah I know, overused reasons, but still valid ones).

No, I don't like using the "it gets better" excuse. I do believe you either like it or you don't from the beginning.

Well, I liked it from the get go. If the early episodes didn't do anything for you at all then obviously it's simply not for you.

But like I said, even great comedy shows in America usually don't get good until halfway through the first season or even later. I don't think The Simpsons was all that sharp until season 3, because many of the personalities needed to be established. King of the Hill didn't hit its stride until season 4.

So I just felt I needed to point that out when it came to comedy shows in general. I guess that may be one reason why I find comedy films much harder to get into because there isn't the familiarity there--you get the 2 hours and that's it.
