Toon Zone Talkback - "Soul Eater, Parts 1 & 2": Watch It, or I'll Take Your Soul

my sentiment's exactly because he just may be the most random character in the entire series
I just picked up the first 26 episodes and I have to agree with mynd here, blackstar was beyond annoying. Comparing the japanese to the english with consideration of blackstar is honestly no contest. Above that minor gripe (ragnarok comes to a close second) the dub is pretty outstanding. I can't wait to finish the series in june (ty school I really appreciate you)
As for Sid I didn't mind that he sounded normal in the dub after he became a zorabie, I sort of expected it. I don't like the way in some shows when a character changes, they automatically have a "monsteresque" voice. Keep it the same voice I say.

But definitely a good dub

lengthy and inconsistent with japanese dialog amazingly
its hard to keep up and when you do its like hey wai a minute that's not exactly what was said

They're too literal, too wordy, and at times hard to understand - which is suicide for a show that is essentialy a comedy. I watched the first two episodes subbed and decided that I hated the series, before deciding on impulse to watch the same ones dubbed. It was like a completely different show. That's really weird coming from FUNi - I've watched some of their shows subbed before and never had an issue.

(FTR, I didn't just base my opinion on those two episodes - I would switch to the subbed version sporadically throughout to see if things improved. They didn't seem to.)

I've been kind of absent from this series for awhile, at least until the manga figures out what direction it's going after its last arc. I won't get into it here, but usually when the anime can't catch up to the manga, the manga's still doing something awesome, and right now the villains are just doing random evil stuff. Some of the cliffhangers don't even make sense because Okubo decides to draw the scene so vaguley, and you have to wait a month to figure out what happened. The lack of my favorite characters is also a bummer that has been going on for a year now.

I wouldn't even recommend a Brotherhood treatment until it does something interesting again.

To be honest I have never actually seen his name rendered as "Kirikou", I've always seen it as "Kilik". "Kirikou" also sounRAB kind of.....awkward. To me anyway. (Dunno why.)

"Puts on nerd glasses"

The thing is, Kirikou was an intentional reference to the french animated film Kirikou and the Sorceress. Maybe the translators thought it sounded awkward also, but we're talking about a minor character here - leaving the name in would have retained the intent without harming anything.

Not enough to make me march in the streets, but it is an annoying thing for them to do.

"Takes off nerd glasses"

I knew it was a reference to Kirikou, though to be honest I do prefer Kilik since it rolls of the tongue much easier. I'm not really nitpicky about those kinRAB of things when it comes to alternate translations. I prefer Krillin to Kuririn for the same reason.
