Toon Zone Talkback - "Soul Eater, Parts 1 & 2": Watch It, or I'll Take Your Soul

This may the Evil Dead fan in me saying this but shouldn't your tagline be: "Watch it, or I'll swallow your soul."?

In any case, yeah, Soul Eater is all kinRAB of goofy, glorious, well-animated goodness. I probably should watch a bit more of it, but I liked what I saw. Granted I think the characters can get a weeeeee bit too overbearing and exaggerated at times, but it's all good fun.

The show is worth watching based on Maka and Soul's partnership alone. Those two are arguably one of the best duos of the past decade.

Oh and the series has some hilarious facial expressions. The animation can take some pretty obvious cost cutting shortcuts, but the reaction faces never get old.

The last time they picked up a show everyone wanted on AS but was inexplicably passed on (Soul Eater does not have a lot of fanservice, right), it became Ani-Monday's most popular show ever.

And the review was glowing. It should air somewhere.

My favorite show of the past few years, I'd go so far to say. The only way I could like it more is if it gets a Brotherhood treatment once the manga enRAB. It's also got my favorite soundtrack in an anime that I can recall. All the songs are awesome.

Believe it or not I don't watch Soul Eater for them 2. Honestly, I don't really care for them that much. I watch it because of Death the Kid and Stein.

I really need to start watching this again. I don't remeraber why I stopped in the first place. I think it had something to do with waiting to see if AS was gonna grab it or not.

I tried to watch the dub, but I couldn't keep going after I heard Black*Star's voice. At least characters like Naruto and Luffy sound like women TRYING to do a boy's voice. Black*Star's VA doesn't sound like she's even trying.

I also found it kind of distracting that they constantly call Shibusen the DMCA or whatever in both the sub and dub. It's a small thing, but especially in the sub, it always bothers me when you can very clearly hear a character say one thing and the sub says another thing.

I don't know, I could never really get into Soul Eater's humor, and consequently I couldn't get into the show itself. I suppose it is a really fun shounen show if its style of humor appeals to you, but it just doesn't appeal to me, personally, which is why I used to be baffled at how popular it was. It is still nice to see a shounen that doesn't try and take itself too seriously as if its the next best series to ever come out, though.

There are times when Soul Eater's humor can be a bit too over the top for my tastes, but overall it's a huge favorite of mine. Death the Kid is easily my favorite character (as I was told he would be before I ever watched the series) and his OCDness is hilarious.

I think the dub is pretty solid overall--my biggest complaint has been Ragnarok through 2 sets because I hear more Usopp than cursed sword. Black*Star's voice has grown on me; it doesn't annoy me so much mostly because the character himself is pretty annoying on the whole.

"Fool!"

Eh, I never got this. Black*Star is hardly the worst example of a woman doing a boy's voice I've heard, and from what I've heard of Britney Karbowski's previous roles, Black*Star is in an obviously lower register. Raspy voices don't work for every character.

In short, Black*Star's voice never took me out of the show.

He sounded incredibly arrogant and obnoxious to me, but that seemed to fit his character fine so I didn't really care whether a woman was voicing him or not.

The only voice I had a problem with was Ragnaroks and Sid's, who I felt both didn't sound 'monsterous' enough given they're a demon and zorabie respectively.

Though after Ragnarok becomes Mini-Ragnarok I think his voice got a lot better and now I like it.

Giriko's also seems a bit bland, but he's only been in one episode so far so maybe it improves. Otherwise, I enjoy the dub. I especially love Tsubaki's, Liz's, Kid's, and Patty's voices.

Blaxk*Star's dub voice is pretty annoying - It's the most important thing I was referring to when I mentioned the dub took some getting used to, considering he's such a major character. I liked his Japanese VA a lot better.

To be fair, though, I do think his english VA got better over time - in his first few appearancea she wasn't much more then loud and annoying, but by the end of Part Two she's got a better grip on it (see the scene where he makes fun of Maka for disobeying Stein).

Honestly, with Ragnarok, I thought it was kinda funny that such a big, dangerous character had such a normal voice. Sid's VA I have no opinion on whatsoever, though - just like all his other aspects.

There were some other VAs that I had problems with on the english side - Medusa sounRAB a little like a stereotypical "villainess", and some of Steins more insane dialogue sounRAB a little forced. And, of course, their's Blair. Over-all, though, I think the dub and the sub are about equal - and with my problems with the subtitling job, it's pretty obvious which one I'd pick.
