Sadly, the ten people that fall for it are doomed. /rimshot
I tried looking it up and I'm not sure what to make of Skull Man. It might be too dark or creepy for me, but then again I handled Death Note and am handling Monster. How bad could it be?
Maria Holic licensed, huh? Wow, do I have a love-hate relationship with this anime.
Love:
- The opening and ending are great, even if the ending felt really kiddy, for a show that had lots of mild strong language.
- I think the first Shaft animated anime to be slightly mature than their other productions. (Sentai better not give it a PG rating, it just doesn't look like it)
- This show basially feels like it has no fourth wall, with basically a few characters notifying the viewers a lot.
- Others find Kanako annoying, I find her lovely.
Hate:
- Bad promotion. Really bad, actually. I mean, I understand them promoting Maria was meat to be clever, but from the artistic promos (ones that are usually seen in anime magazines) that I noticed from this anime when it first aired in Japan, Kanako is barely in these promotions at all, as in, every girl except, and this almost makes me think that even the animation company hates her, despite the fact that she's a lesbian, and apperantly, Shaft either thought it was too easy, or they really just hate her. There's standarRAB, double standarRAB, but there's also triple standarRAB.
- Maria, well, don't expect "her" to be likable at all.
- It felt too short, which brings me to the next problem:
This was my favorite show of 2007; I'm definitely picking up the complete collection.
As for people who don't know about this series: it's one of those series you either like or find dreadfully boring. It's not incredibly dark and has alot of lighter moments; also you have to be familiar with Shotaro Ishinomori's other works to get every thing.
I wonder if the DVD collection will include the live-action episode 0.
The second you're doing suicide jokes and social commentary (which many of the characters in the classroom are explicitly geared around being,) you're not aiming at a young or even necessarily a young-teenaged audience. Yeah, by content it wouldn't merit more than a TVPG/TV14, but keep in mind that Weekly Shonen where Zetsubou runs skews towarRAB a more high school/college age demographic, so it's being written with late teens to mid-twenty somethings in mind. It's borderline seinen.
..but why, why would they not dub somthing like skull-man, its like japan's equivlent to ghost rider (but with more violence) why would'nt they dub it....Oh fate, why must you be such a cruel mistres...kero.
(Curls up in featle position)
seriously though...that stinks....to bad it didn't get picked up by someone who would dub it, oh well on the bright side at least its coming out stateside & I can still rent it. (thats right I shall think positive!)
One instance vs. a character constantly trying to off himself because of his own problems and society's ills is a huge difference. Even then the Incredibles was PG, I said that Zetsubou about merited the same. Of course, this doesn't change the part where I also mentioned that the magazine it runs in is targeted at a somewhat older audience, and upon further research, it ran on satellite and indie uhf stations in non-peak time slots, further putting the show in a mature audience (or at the very least, otakucentric niche audience) category.
I think we should make a point that the teacher tries to kill himself in like the first 30 seconRAB of the series....and nearly every other episode....and in the OP songs.....and the ED songs...and the OVA...
