This is the talkback thread for "Rio" Fails To Completely Take Flight.

I can't help but notice that this movie hasn't managed to set the forums on fire. Nobody's even started a talkback thread about it here yet.

And, from AerostarMonk's review, it sounds like there's a reason for that.

While seeing Rio hasn't been extremely high on my priority list, I will say I'm happy that Blue Sky's latest film isn't another Ice Age entry. It shows they're not a one trick pony.

FTR, it has a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I don't know, I liked it. It wasn't ground breaking, but it was fun, it had nice character designs and animation and it held my attention.

Despite how it may seem, I actually enjoyed it too. I was just disappointed that there were no twists on established formula.

I've heard that there are scenes that were cut that do deviate quite far from the formula, or at least offer fresher jokes. But since they were left out to keep the G rating we have what we do now.

I really do wish they would've kept the focus on the humans. That would've been a nice change of pace. You don't see too much of that kind of thing. And it would've been a welcome and refreshing surprise.

I wasn't impressed with the marketing campaign. I mean, I'll probably rent it when the time comes, but I don't really have any desire to see this in theatres. I will say, I am a little curious as to know how this is getting such good reviews, though. Really, it looked like such an underwhelming and uninteresting to me from a promotional standpoint. I am a tad curious to see how good it actually is.

...and on a different note, I'll say this again; this review really delves into why I think professional voice actors should be the ones getting work in animated feature films; not celebrities. I'm not surprised from what I read here. Hearing that the actors of this film are basically talking into the mic with their regular speaking voices (lol at Tracy Morgan) sounds no different than a countless number of other uninspired performances that I've heard in the past. It's unusual to me how and why these roles are chosen the way they are, and why people in the movie business really feel that throwing a name like Anne Hathaway or George Lopez on a promotional poster of an animated movie is somehow going to sell that many more tickets. I mean, come on; are they really going to lose that much more money if they actually used professional voice actors in starring roles, instead of celebrities/non VA's?

An animated film being far better than it's promotional campaign is the norm these days.

Really though, it seems pretty good to me and I'll rent it on DVD. From what I've seen by trailers, I'm impressed by the CGi animation and vibrant art. It seems that studios in general have finally mastered CGI's potential for fluid and cartoony expression on the same level as traditional animation. Hopefully in a few years, they'll also embrace more original story concepts and rely less on starpower for VAs.

The movie was enjoyable, and I'd disagree that it was "nothing new". It was fun seeing an animated musical that had a touch of rock opera to it. True, Disney's done it in Oliver & Company and A Goofy Movie, but those were both decades ago. :P

I saw it in theaters today and I thought it was pretty good. I mean it's no Oscar winner but it was enjoyable never the less. I am really surprised there is no talkback thread.

I like the movie too. I saw the midnight show (yes, we had a midnight show here). The reason I didn't make a talkback thread is I'm usually beaten to it *cough*Lord Dalek*cough* I used to make them all the time, but I stopped for that reason.

There is so much to say that is great about Rio. I've seen most of them, and the Music, Color, Animation and Style here as good as any. There is a wonderful upbeat feeling about Rio that is very unusual.
.. If you haven't seen it, do so in a theater, and see it in 3D, cause there are some wonderful effects here, and it is a totally enjoyable film. It is a film that is lots of fun.
..more to come in another post.

I saw Rio last week. My brother took me to see it as a late birthday gift. here's what I gotta say about Rio. I should tell everyone that I am not a big fan on Blue Sky's cartoons. If you ask why, I will tell you why. Blue Sky has something in common with Dreamworks Animation. They have good ideas for animated films, but however they are not pullde off correctly. However, this one caught my attention and I manage to sit through the whole movie. While parts of the movie are humorous and having a very catchy soundtrack along with a great villian. Some of the music in this is rather good surprisingly, I really liked "pretty bird" and "Let me take you to Rio". Those two songs will be stuck in my head for a while. I would say the villan song makes it in my book on what makes the movie good. You gotta see how well animated this particular scenes is.

The humans in this movie look more 'cartoony' then in most animated films that are CG. They look like Doug Tennapel designed characters. Also the birds looked rather nice as well. They are heading towards a cartoony look as well. Did anyone here get a Saludos Amigos vibe from this? I know it takes place in Brazil but heck I got a vibe from that. I felt that certain parts of the movie had stuff in it that was forced. I won't say who said this line, but one character said "That's the Spitz!" orsomething on the lines of that. And the gangster stuff, uggh. I wish that they would stop shoving that stuff in nearly every animated film. It annoys me how they do that. It doesn't work for everything you know.

On the lines of voice acting, I wasn't aware that big shot stars were doing them. However these voices were good(minus the person who voiced the toucan). If they were to get actual voice acting for these characters I picture Rob Paulsen doing the Toucan, although I cant think of anyone else for the voicing the characters though. So you can say that I enjoyed Rio. If Blue Sky can make something like this, or on the lines of this I'd give them a chance. Although there was this one annoying kid who wouldn't shut up throughout the whole movie, he kept yelling "BIRD! BIRD! BIRD!". Where are the angry birds when you need them?

My main problem with Rio is that there were a lot of scenes that could have been a lot better with a bit more style. The whole movie had a strong soundtrack, but the camera had a bad habit of standing still during a scene where it really should have been panning and cutting to compliment the background music.

Someone DID start a talkback thread, it's right here: Rio Talkback. It didn't get many comments though...

I did watch the movie, and it was enjoyable. The soundtrack was nice, the characters were nice & good looking (though I didn't like Tulio & Luiz). Also, the villian was actually competent and nnice and at first I though he died like Syndrome (but didn't die). Sio yeah, it's a very enjoyable movie, I recommend it.
