Toon Zone Talkback - Otakon 2009: Funimation Acquires 3 New Properties

Can't say I heard about that survey. I did hear about the Funi request for information from the fans about what people want and SM kinda snuck in there. Per Adam himself, it's just not available right now, and it was yanked from North America right after the live action show came out. The stories I've heard say that Toei wants someone to do something with the live action show, but it's just a non-starter in any major way over here.

Its hard for me to get worked up or interested in these Dragon Box releases.

Does anyone care to tell me if this means that Dragon Ball Z episodes will FINALLY be released with Japanese 5.1 surround sound instead of freaking 1.0 MONO.

Listen, they already did those Uncut DBZ box sets that were basically a ripoff as they marketed them with these FANCY NEW RE-DUB scripts that were hardly re-dubbed or re-written at all. With a half-witted "digital remastering/cleanup" that didn't look all so great.

Why should I invest in these so called Dragon Boxes?

I highly doubt there'll ever be a 5.1 mix for the japanese track. The original japanese release didn't have them, so we're not getting them.

Frankly, I don't see how a 5.1 mix would be possible outside of having the mono sound playing through all five speakers (minus sub-woofer) rather than a true 5.1 mix. The quality would remain the same either way.

There's more on what we'll be getting at Kanzentai's guide for the Dragon Boxes:

More here: http://www.kanzentai.com/dvd.php?id=dbox_z1

Properly restored picture and sound? Possible bonus features carried over from the japanese release? 80 page hardcover booklets? All of the opening animations as well next episode previews being included for the first time in the US?

My problem with the Uncut box sets is that they were glorifying a shoddily "remastered" product.

They claimed they re-edited and re-dubbed the script when they hardly did it at all. They could've gone back and fixed some rather heinous mistakes with this "re-dub" but they didn't. It was the same stuff from back in the day. Like Vegeta insulting Bulma when actually he acknowledges her and shows some hint of respect for her bravery which at least foreshadows to their future relationship.

Restored picture and sound is what they marketed with the basically useless uncut boxsets which are rendered useless now because of these new releases.

Not interested really. Just more ways to continue to milk the dry DBZ cow.

The difference here being that this is finally a respectable release up to the standarRAB of their other licensed properties and is something that the hardcore fans have been hoping for for years.

The improved video and audio are straight from Japan, rather than FUNimation recycling their old masters from the VHS era over and over again like they have in the past.

For this release, they actually went and obtained all this new material to work with. These are the exact same materials the Japanese worked with for their remastered DVD collection, right down to the box art. Obtaining the Dragon Box is like a labor of love to all the loyal DBZ fans who put up with all the subpar releases. In Japan, this was a limited pre-order only release that cost roughly $1000 a pop.

Milking the cash cow would be releasing another half-hearted release with insignificant 'improvements' for the sake of making another quick buck. Despite what the advertising for the previous sets said, this is truly the definitive release of the series. The only way to improve it would be perhaps Blu-Ray, which is unlikely as there's no way Toei would let them do it as they don't even have a Blu-Ray Dragon Box release.

It's fine that you're not interested, but don't just write it off like that.

Same voice as Kululu in the prevous test? Interesting. I think that could work. I do wonder who the new Kululu will be though.

Glad to hear the script is better.

I'm really looking forward to this release.

I've seen the Dragon Boxs. They have truly awesome picture quality.

But like I said, if their dub is just the same stuff we heard on the orange bricks, it's not worth it to buy them.

What happened to Vic Micnogona? Not that I'm complaining. I never thought his voice fit Keroro. Kululu's voice, however, I think would fit much better.

While the news of a NA release of the Dragon Box is super special awesome, it's kind of funny how each new version of the show that they release enRAB up getting called "the way it was meant to be seen." It's almost as if FUNi is constantly going up to us and saying "No, really! We're serious this time!"

Who wants to bet that the first trailer for FUNimation's inevitable Dragon Ball Kai releases will contain either the phrases "the way it was meant to be seen" or "the definitive release?"

Vic was only in the ADV test dubs and trailer it was Chris Cason as Keroro in FUNi's test dub they posted on YouTube.

And while he actually sounded fine, I'd still rather have someone other than Vic as Keroro. Rather not have him as Kululu either. I could see him as one of the snake aliens though among other minor characters. Perhaps even the "cool guy" who is Kululu's human.

Well, for thirteen years fans have waited for a proper complete uncut and subbed release of the series. Now we're getting it...in DBOX form. These masters were done by human beings, frame by frame as I understand. FUNimation's old releases were done by a machine. As Adam Sheehan said in the video, this is something Toei said America would never have. Hell, Toei was so cheap they didn't give FUNi the audio for the next episode previews way back when (of course, FUNimation did get the series for next to nothing).

Fans at Daizex are already selling their orange bricks and even Japanese DBOX singles to get ready for this release. I only bought the first orange brick so not much skin off my back.

I really can't wait to see the menus for these puppies. Our fellow forum meraber Daimao said he began work on the NEPs recently, too!

"Ossu, ora Gokuu!"

Only true fans watch the original DBZ on T.V when it first came out on Japan, around the late 80's. Not buying them on DVD, but when it was original air on T.V. in japan

Anyways, I might get this DBZ Boxset. But...I pretty much seen every episode already. So, I might wait for the "Dragonball" Boxset instead.

Well I am very irritated because I bought the season sets and accepted the faux widescreen because 1. I wanted to hear the dub with the original BGM. missing insert songs aside. 2. It was the only way I could get the whole series with out buying several boxsets and 3. I believed that Funimation did this because Toei would not let them use the Dragon Box footage.

Dont get me wrong I'm excited about this because I've heard good things about the Dragon Box but I hate it that this is happening now AFTER I have all nine orange boxsets on my shelf.

Long story short I'm happy and angry

That's exactly the same situation I'm in. What's more is that I'm sure that 2 months after the Dragon Boxes are finished, FUNimation will announce that they have Kai. I don't know what to do. I guess I'll wait to see how much Right Stuf has the Dragon Boxes for, and if it would make sense to buy them once they have a FUNimation sale. Seriously, does anyone here want to buy any of the nine Orange Bricks? They'll be cheap...

Kai is different enough from DBZ that I wouldn't worry about feeling cheated. With the DBox's at least we'll finally have the show in it's proper aspect ratio.
