Toon Zone Talkback - Otakon 2009: Funimation Acquires 3 New Properties

.... Sorry, I know I sound like a broken record at times. But who ever said I think Dub fans are helpless victims? I personally think Sub and Dub fans act like helpless victims to one another.

Sub fans not getting everything what they want. And Dub Fans get bash because they don't like reading. Everything got its light and dark side.

I do have my reasons why I don't respect the Sub fans, but also with the Dub fans as well.

In the case of DragonBall sub fans just wanted every episode uncut and subbed. We never got that properly until now (what with the only completed release of DBZ in the states being cropped and thrown into a DVNR).

I suppose the only thing dubs fans never got that they wanted were the continued use of the Bruce Faulconer themes in episodes 1-67, GT, DB, and the films Faulconer never scored.

Even with this new Dragonball Box coming to the U.S, I bet SOME Sub fans will find away to complain & Nit-Pick.

That and some bad dialogs which need to be change and re-written. BADLY!

My question is for the Dragonball Box, English dub? I will buy it, but if it has english dub track in it as well. The reason why I ask because wel...I'm not a big fan of reading. Like I said before, "I buy DVD's to watch, not to read". I'm not hating on the JP dubs, AT ALL!! If I can understand japanese, I'll listen to the JP dubs. But, like 90% in the U.S, I don't understand japanese.

DON'T HATE PEOPLE! And please, because I'm asking for a Dub track, doesn't mean I'm a "casual fan". Just because I don't buy everything that has the word "Dragonball", doesn't mean I'm a "casual fan". It means I'm not a big fan of wasting money. There's a difference between those two.

Actually, unless FUNimation is misleading sub fans, then no. They're getting everything they want, espicially if they don't cancel the release midway through.

And while I agree the dub neeRAB to be fixed, most dub fans in my experience don't care. They're happily content with the version and continuity FUNimation's crapped out over the years. The movement for an accurate dub died years ago, now people just want the Japanese version accurately subbed (and forum meraber's Daimao and Mato make sure that happens) and available uncropped and completely.

EDIT: Allow Daizex.com's latest update to help clear some stuff up:

Who knows...Things can happen before the Dragonball Box comes out, things might change.

Na, Na, I'm pulling your leg...Or am I?

Thats one of the down sides for some dub fans. There is a line from being crap to decent dubs, sadly not many dub fans can see it. Personally, I wish FUNimation fix the Frieza saga dub to the Cell game dub. Some lines where ok, but in all...Not really.

Pretty much saying "PERFECTION". Though, I still think there will be some change in the Dragonball Box, but up to the level where the "True-Fans" will not complain about it.

It's ultra-nice that FUNi has Eden Of The East. I kinda expected this one to head to Bandai for some reason but FUNi will treat it right and it'll probably get a really good dub. Hope this means that FUNi has inroaRAB to the movies as well.

Casshern Sins getting licensed isn't a bad thing either, but Eden made me happy.

I'm curious what the dub news for Soul Eater and FMA:B are. At least we were given a loose timeframe for release of the news.

I wonder if the Dub track going to be like in the seasons boxset. Like, one U.S Dub track will be like it was shown in T.V, and another going to have the dubs with the JP audio in it. I hope so. And (But I doubt it), they will fix some lines in the Dub. You know which ones....

The DBOX isn't really being made for dub fans though, so why do new recordings, espicially with the sub scripts for the previews not even done yet (Daimo can correct me on this) and either Schemmel or Hebert needing to fly down to Texas to record them, espicially with such little time left.

Again, this release if defaulting to Japanese with subs, so don't expect much of anything put into any new recordings for the dub track.

YESSSSSSSS.

I knew they were gonna do something like this.

...well, not a Dragon Box BUT STILL. I just hope they don't find a way to mess it up.

I'm not...The only thing why I'm buying it for...FOR...FOR...Bones prize!!!

The little gifts thats going to be in the DVD's Boxset and the DVD's it self.

I'm thinking that's what they meant by a release not for casual fans - Japanese music with no Johnson, Faulconer, or Menza tracks. As far as dub lines go, I'm sure they'll do that with Dragonball Kai.

And although I don't mind reading subtitles, I would still be happier with a dub track (was this 100% confirmed, BTW?) Plus it would give me the chance to see what dub lines were/were not changed.

I'm not really seeing a problem with a devided fanbase other than that some people take these things waaaaaaay too seriously (on every side of the argument).

Not everyone is going to like the same thing obviously. That's why the fanbase has been devided. And some fans will ALWAYS complain about something. Even if there's nothing to complain about.

Dragonball Z has had several different kinRAB of fans obviously ranging from some of the most casual cartoon watchers to the most obsessive otaku.

I can enjoy DBZ with the english voices and the Japanese score and in a sense that's how it always should have been.

Thing is though, that english score has been around for years and a lot of people like it and consider it part of the show. So I think it's inclusion is sensible. But if it's a sacrifice in video or audio quality then they can leave it out.

That dub is some people's favorite cartoon and naturally they'd love to get it with a crisp picture without cropping just like subs fans do for the Japanese version. You're acting like the Orange Boxes should be satisfactory enough for those fans which seems at the very least rather hypocritical.

I'm all for a more accurately translated dub but that's a rediculous process to even consider... redubbing this show again? I'd like to see it but I'm not holding my breathe and it's not like there's that many changes from what I've seen. Sure there's 9,000 vs 8,000... whatever. And stuff like "Krillin's in da house" is kind of funny but ultimately moronic. I'm just hoping Dragonball Kai doesn't end up using the same silly dub add-ins and I expect it wont whenever it is released.

You keep going on about "this is our time", "this is the proper way to see it", "this is how it always should have been" and frankly it grinRAB my gears. It could be said the proper way to watch DBZ is raw in Japanese without the aid of subtitles. Obviously not everyone speaks Japanese so subs in their native language probably makes that more enjoyable for them. And some people prefer dubs, furthermore some people like what many would call "bad" dubs with "bad" music and while you're certainly welcome to dissagree with them they still have their right to their opinions.

I can somewhat understand your minRABet. Obviously I'd wonder why anyone would want the 4kiRAB One Piece music included on the uncut FUNimation boxsets. But unlike 4kiRAB stock music I like the DBZ dub music at least to an extent. I like music that fits the show I'm watching. I don't feel the Japanese score of DBZ is all that fitting... and that's not going to change with a release that doesn't include the dub score. But hey don't worry I fully support this release and intend to buy it cause I love me some Dragonball and this is the most efficient way to own it thus far (and I only bought one orange box and some singles comprising of the Cell Games saga in both cases).

But I digress, good for you and sub fans that you're getting everything you've been waiting for. Celeberate the good times... just please avoid shoving it down dub fans' throats. They're sick of hearing it.

Like me!
I know there's a fine line to have a debate to getting way to personal.

I know I will.

I do as well.

Though, I did find some JP score was a tab bit better in the U.S one. But nothing beats where Goku first becomes a Super Saiyan.

Still don't know why DBKai is so big, its nothing new, but whatever.

Personally, I like the 4kiRAB Pokemon dub. Thats the only decent dub 4kiRAB ever done right.

Agree. Even though its now the Sub Fans time to shine, that doesn't mean they can rub it in.

Finally the DBOX's! This is so great. Now I'm worried to buy the DB season sets. FUNI will probably announce DBox footage for DB and DBGT after that. LOL O well, the season sets for DB and DBGT are nearly perfect anyway.

A split fanbase means needless arguments and split marketing. No doubt many take their crusades too far.

No doubt. I have to almost wonder myself if I'm not saying some radical things, but hey...I pretty much believe it all.

My point was that had FUNimation treated the DB property as they do their other properties such arguments would never take place in the first place.

No doubt, and FUNimation has been making the correct steps toward making sure even the casual Joes wind up watching an English version somewhat accurate (changing the dialogue would be a bit too costly, but making the English version with Japanese music the default setting on the Season Sets was damned right of 'em). My only concern--forgive my weakness--is that some ignorant schmuck (God bless his soul for giving the series a chance) is duped into thinking the American track is better by a friend before even giving the property's actual score a chance.

Many of us can.

I'm right there wit'cha, I grew up on it too, but in the grand scheme of things it's made a chism in the fanbase, a fanbase ever still growing, and ever still maturing. But yeah, axe it if it's going to screw up our precious new video!!

Well, in my experience these sets have been well accepted by the aforementioned crowd, and they HAVE sold like hotcakes-for-a-penny. But yes, it is hypocritical. I am not without some shred of bias, however I fear for the continued prosperity of the proper spirit of the series, and for the quality of this box.

No doubt I am not without sin.

I'm all for a new and accurate dub so as to unify the English-speaking fanbase as much as possible. The dub's script is most of the time unrecognizable from the original's, however. Character's have personalities rewritten (Gok

I'm kind of excited. First of all I grew up with the Spanish dub of DBZ which had an awesome script and original music so it was pretty awesome. By the time I moved to the states DBZ had just started airing here and were still premiering the Freeza saga while I had already seen the entire DB/DBZ and most of DBGT and I didn't want to wait weeks for all of the filler of the freeza saga so thats how I slowly grew out of DB. I did occasionally catch the show when it was on and always the Cell saga, so I'm actually somewhat fond of the dub cell saga BGM, its very dull compared to the original but I have nostalgia for it and because of the videogames I'm fond of the american voices. So actually I want this to have the american BGM for that and I'd definitely get it. I'd like to have a better quality version of the show on DVD but since it doesn't have the spanish dub I'm not too sure if I'd get it if it doesn't have the american BGM. I don' at least for the DBKai release It'll definitely have the spanish dub since we share the same region.

Just a quick question, for the widescreen season sets they didn't just cut it right? The show actually had "sides" that had nothing important in them right? While the bottom and top did have important stuff right?

I'm not too clear on this so I drew this picture of how I think it is from what I've read:

I know the image is not accurate but you get the point, I did it on Paint quickly without a mouse, don't judge .

And basically Dragon Ball Kai does the same thing the season sets do only maybe a bit better right?

So yeah for me theres no reason to ever get the orange brick releases since the "widescreen" I'm missing will be on those releases.
