Toon Zone Talkback - Otakon 2009: Funimation Acquires 3 New Properties

They got Eden? Kickass. It'd be a damn shame if that show just went the way of the dodo in favor of another big show getting remaded, restarted or redone somehow.

Well, from what I've seen, every other post of yours tries to paint dub fans as the helpless victims of the a-hole elitist sub fans who make it their goal to make your life miserable.S ub fans have been mean to you in the past...we get that. There's no need to bring it up as constantly as you do.

Well, to be fair, FUNi's Dragon Box sets are going to end up being a hell of a lot cheaper than the Japanese releases. So I can see reverse importation being a real issue here.

"Why doesn't Toei just...I dunno...lower the prices for the Dragon Box releases in Japan?" Because their prices are about on-par with every other DVD release of every other series in Japan. From their point of view, why shouldn't they charge the same price as their competitors? It'd be the equivalent of an American DVD company releasing a 30-episode box set for $5.

Welll...this is kind of what FUNimation does, is it not? Announce a new, better release of DBZ after the previous one is already out? At least this time they finished off the Season sets instead of canceling them midway *coughUltimateUncutscough*

Its nice to hear that Dragon Box Z is being release over here. I'm not going to buy it, since I just finished buying the Seasons sets. If they do release the Dragon Ball: Dragon Box over here then yeah, I'll get that.

Also would like to point out how the press release only signifies 'an English track' which might be code for FUNimation dropping this two BGM track nonsense and going with the original Japanese BGM from now. Hopefully it'll remend rifts in the fandom (and trust me, there's a billion of them).

But yeah, I think FUNimation acknowledges that this release is really for the hardcore Japanese/correct aspect ratio crowd they've been ignoring for years. Their Americanized dub of the series has gotten it's dues, now's the time for the fans of the original.

Holy crap, Toei finally did something nice to Americans for a change! While you're on a roll Funi, you mind grabbing Sailor Moon out of rights hell?

It's cool that Funimation is bringing over the Dragon Box releases of Dragon Ball Z to America. However, since I already have seasons 1-4 of the remastered sets, I might get the rest of the series that way, too. I say that the remastered sets will be cheaper than the Dragon Box sets, and the cropping doesn't really bother me that much.

Plus, I don't know if the American releases of the Dragon Box sets will be dubbed or not, since I watch Dragon Ball Z dubbed. The Dragon Box sets also may not include the dub audio track, which is the track that I use when I watch the series.

What exaclty do you mean by that?

There will always be people with different opinions on how they prefer to watch shows and no opinion is more right than another. Remeraber that.

Ooh, squeeful for Eden of the East. That definitely seemed like a good series for FUNi to pick up. Nice about the Dragon Box sets as well, though I plan to hold out for Kai.

Looking forward to the Soul Eater and FMA dubs as well.

Yup - though it'll default to Japanese, which I think is a good choice for the "definitive" release.

And thinking it over... wow, this really is a GREAT deal, isn't it? 42 episodes for $80, along with, I believe, a free booklet and some fancy special features. Now, I'd bet Amazon and other such retailers will be chopping the price down to $70 or even $60! Factor in the booklet, worth a good chunk of change in and of itself... that factors out to roughly a dollar an episode. Consider most boxes can be up to THREE TIMES that, well, it's a bargain if I've ever seen one.

However, I'm still going to wait on it. They've confirmed the movies are getting a Dragonbox, too, so I'm betting Dragonball and GT will be getting one, too, eventually, and I'm waiting until I can start from the REAL beginning.

And now I'm nervous about buying the new Dragonball sets, if they do release a Dragonbox version at some point.

It will, but from what I can tell they won't be fixing the problems with the dub. Could be wrong, but what they're giving us now is pleasing enough, VERY pleasing, and once I save up enough money I'm getting the "Dragon Box" for sure.

I had a feeling FUNimation would do something like this eventually, but not this soon, I figured they would just make a Blu-Ray release down the line in 4:3 with more extra features. The thing is this might delay the release of "Dragonball KAI", obviously it'll happen, but I think FUNimation is smart enough to not let several "Dragonball Z" releases compete with each other at the same time. I have a feeling if "Kai" gets announced soon, it'll come out on FUNimation's video players and/or T.V. first and on DVD/Blu-Ray a little later.

I've just posted video for the announcement portion of our panel on our blog.

Yeah as we all know, the big T is a painfully difficult studio to work with when it comes to licences.

I'd like to believe that but I've not heard otherwise.

On another note... anyone here familiar with the Dragon Box know of its 480i or 480p?

Very cool and exciting to hear about a Dragonbox set release for the US. I have every single DBZ/DB/GT release (including the Pioneer discs and minus all but one of the "Funi remastered" sets) so adding this to my collection (or as I call it "the wall") is a must. I was mad at Funimation for a long time since they stopped the "Ultimate Uncut Special Edition" packaging which left a giant gap in their DVD box. But now I feel better knowing I can give the UUSE discs away without losing anything.

DB Season 1 .... Case Closed movies ..... Dragonbox .... Funimation is owning my wallet again.

BTW, would it be a better idea to create a new thread for this announcement since "3 new properties" is something different? Speaking of something different, "DayTime Drinking" looks good.

What I'm saying is FUNimation has created numerous cracks in the English fanbase, creating dozens of sub-cultures within it, something they've not done with any of their other titles. Granted, DBZ comes from the nineties and was essentially Pok

Hmm, nice for Eden of the East coming over and the DBOX sets as well. Good thing I only got two of the season boxsets, now I don't have a reason to get them.
