Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

Venus is a great character, easily the most interesting character in NT The Next Mutation, and that show is not that bad, most people bash it but I doubt most people have actually seen the show besides an episode or two.

TMNT had plenty "shark jumping" moments before Venus, people blame her for the demise of the turtles but the fad had ended many years prior. While I like having four turtles I want to see Venus again as a recurring character we see in a few episodes through out the shows run.

To echo MegaJ's post, I'm guessing that the new series will run on Nicktoons rather than Nick proper; Nick doesn't seem to do all that well with or be willing to run action cartoons, Avatar being the notable exception.

I'm wondering what approach the new show will take: will it be edgy and hard like the 4Kids show, or silly and cartoony like the '87 syndicated series? Or maybe a mix of both?

Mirage is over? I don't like the sound of that at all.

Peter is actually giving up the Turtles? I'm shell shocked and concerned. I wanted TMNT to live on but I'm weary of how Nickelodeon will handle the property now that they own it outright and this could also be the end of the indepent comic TMNT.

I just don't know what to think... This could work out but Mirage was always there to keep 4kids on the right track and now Mirage will have no involement after they pass it off. I guess that means we could see the 80s toon characters return full force but at what cost to the quality of the franchise?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

And along with that I'm wondering how I might be able to take part in the creation of that series slated for 2012. I've never really had the urge to seek out employement with a company to work on a property but TMNT is a franchise I hold near and dear.

I actually don't remember that much of The Next Mutation other than Venus and that the turtles made a guest appearance in a Power Ranger episode once. I remember that Venus was from Japan, didn't really understand some American phrases and didn't fight as much as the other turtles. I didn't really mind a fifth turtle, but I think making the original four not brothers in this series was a huge mistake. I agree that if she was more of an established character in the franchise prior to this series, most fans wouldn't have been so upset with her existence. It still might have been a big risk to make, but it might have turned out better in the long run.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about this. As a hardcore TMNT fan from the 80's who followed the franchise for 20+ years, I don't know what to think. My random thoughts:

- TMNT 2k3 is officially over after the "Turtles Forever" movie. OK, I loved this series but this is it. I hope they release it properly on DVD, as much as I'll miss it.

- Will the original TMNT cartoon still be owned by Fred Wolf? We still need Seasons 9 and 10 on DVD.

- We're getting a new CG TV series? I wonder if it could look like the 4th movie, or at least similar

- What happens to the Mirage comics?

Truly, this news is as big a shock as Disney buying Marvel. What is happening to the world? Everything from my childhood has been changed!

The funny thing is not only was Venus ignored, but all the villains from the Next Mutation were ignored as if they never happened.

Dragon Lord (the main villain), Bonesteel, Silver, Vam Mi, Doctor Queeze were brand new villains made just for that show.

They never re-appeared in any other TMNT property. So its not just Venus, virtually any character created for the Next Mutation was "swept under the carpet," so to speak.

Unlike villains from the original cartoon and comics, who end up re-appearing every so often and will probably appear in the Nick show.

While there is nothing wrong with the eighties toon I just hope Nicks Turtles cartoon is not too much like it. For one thing it will look like a cheep imatation if it's too much like the eighties toon. That and I don't want more serous Turtles to vanish from TV completely.

Still I hope what ever Turtles show Nick has in store it's good.

Oh I expect Nick and Nicktoons to air both Turtles cartoons for a while, (They are trying to get the rights to the old toon right? Why else would they want it.)

I know 4Kids CW4Kids tv rights end at Aug. 2010 so my guess thats when there rights will start and they will begin airing TMNT2K3 in the fall of 2010. I'm betting they were looking for the tv rights before they out right bought the whole property. I'm shocked it took this long for Nicktoons or DXD to get it seven seasons over a hundred episodes and a DTV/special of an already established brand any cable toon netowrk should be jumping a the chance to ge the show. Lets face it its no secret Disney ruined there plans for bringing up the boys brand. There going to lose those Marvel shows sooner or later they need a replacemnt.

I don?t mind a regular female with the Turtles, just make her another species to avoid being repetitive. That?s why fans fondly remember characters like MonaLisa (90s show) and Ninjara (Archie) better.

As long as the rest of the original series and Turtles Forever is released on DVD, I don't mind this deal. It does mean we probably won't see a dark and gritty TMNT any time soon, though.

That post was an interesting read. Too bad some of the commenters can't agree with or understand Laird's decision.

What ever happened to the co-creator of TMNT anyway?

No offense, but I think it would be better for you if you relaxed and stopped worrying over TMNT so much. We're close to 2010, so a two year break for a new series isn't that long. I honestly won't be so old in 2012. I'll only be twenty-three by then and it isn't like a two to three year gag will suddenly make us too old to watch cartoons. As others have mentioned, a break is good for any series. It's better to give the new staff time to work on their series than to have them rush out a product that may not work so well.

I also think you missed how Nick will get reruns right to the 2k3 series, so they'll most likely air that series during the break before the new series comes it. Plus, just because a new TMNT series is not airing during those years doesn't mean that no one will even bother with the franchise. There are plenty of episodes from both series and a good amount of movies and comics for people to keep their interest in the series. Another good thing about Nick airing the 2K3 series is that it would help introduce new kids to the franchise since the 4Kids blocks aren't generally that well known.

Actually, according to Dan Berger, under the new deal, Mirage are no longer permitted to print trades, only single issues with no more than 40 pages. And that's only for a couple more months. Which means, among other things, that the TMNT books that were planned, like the TMNT Universe Sourcebook, as well as 'The Forever War', a mini-series that was finally going to wrap up the original Archie Comics TMNT storyline, are now cancelled. Sucks.

Also, watch any and all TMNT related media (manga translations, fan videos, show clips) get taken down as part of Viacom's long standing policy on internet distribution of intellectual property. Fun.

He might even be reacting to the fact that Viacom now owns Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

In which case, he's so late to the news that even a picture of Slowpoke wouldn't make it funny.
