Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

There's some pros and cons in this move I guess.

From a TV standpoint, Nickelodeon's a big company with deep pockets and resources so they can really put as much as needed into the new cartoon. And the new series can get a whole lot more exposure and promotion than the 2K3 series did, because Nickelodeon's such a force. However, I'm guessing it won't be able to run past 65 episodes (maybe a good thing, maybe a bad thing, depends). Multiple iterations can change that though. I was actually hoping for a CG cartoon to differentiate from what came before, so off to a good start I guess.

From a movie standpoint, I'm guessing this dissolves any hopes fans had of seeing a PG-13 TMNT movie (I think the chances of that planned live-action one being PG-13 were slim to none anyway, what with 4Kids having been on tap to handle licensing). Still, I imagine Nickelodeon will be willing to put a lot of effort and resources into it, as much as needed to make it a success.

From a comic standpoint...??? A big question mark and I'm sure a big cause for concern and uncertainty in the fanbase, although the comics were getting like zero exposure at this point anyway. Who knows what this means for that area. Probably not good things.

But now, all control is out of the creators' hands. That's kind of worrisome. Nickelodeon will definitely be a lot more willing to reach into the 80s series for characters and concepts, however, which is something Laird was never into. There's always two sides to this kind of thing.

Probably the biggest thing that will cause people to worry is that TMNT is now just one of Nickelodeon's many, many properties, instead of being the cornerstone of Mirage. It wouldn't be nearly as worrisome if Nickelodeon had simply acquired TV rights rather than being the entire property lock stock and barrel. So TMNT has a future with Nickelodeon for the foreseeable future but there's less of that certainty that it will come back after it fades again, after X amount of years. But that's looking a good like 6-10 years into the future, so who knows.

Anyway I'm sure Gary Richardson is leaning back in his chair with a big cigar right now.

Yeah, I think it's safe to assume the new cartoon will be a companion to the new movie, directly or indirectly.

I heard last week at ninjaturtles.com site, that Nickelodeon is going to be the domain name of this site, this week.

So does anybody what they'll gain controll of the TMNT Website?

Turtles forever is going to air November 21st on CW4Kids.

Also Does anybody know when nick/paramount will own the dvd licence and make more season sets?

Do they do season Sets?

Whether it's canon or not, the fact is that the cartoon series used scripts written for the original TV series before it was cancelled.

TMNT 4Kids confirmed that Nick owns TMNT, Mirage won't be working with TMNT in the future.

I have mixed opinions, for one we might never see a cartoon like the 2k3 show, but who knows Avatar is one of the best shows made, I prefer it over the 2k3 show. It also means we'll never see a "comic roots" adaptation. But then again, that was mostly the fans expecting something that was NEVER going to happen anyways if Mirage owned TMNT.

The only reason Wolverine and Iron Man are on Nicktoons is because Nickelodeon doesn't own those properties outright. They were acquisitions, not originals they produced. Nicktoons is usually the place where the acquisitions air. They didn't own Three Delivery, Speed Racer, Corneil and Bernie, and Edgar and Ellen. They do own and co-produced The Penguins of Madagascar, Back to the Barnyard, and Kung Fu Panda. The new TMNT series is owned outright by Nickelodeon, and all Nick-owned originals premiere on Nickelodeon.

It's premiering on Nickelodeon proper, not Nicktoons. Nick is slowly building momentum for action-oriented programming, and I doubt that they'd bury a property they spent big money on at their fourth-important network (see, Nick is their most important network, Teen Nick is their second most important, and Nick Jr. is their third most important).

Star Trek fans also didn't want a reboot, when a reboot was what the franchise really needed.

I am waiting for Paramount to show its plans for TMNT before I start calling out "Ruined Forever."

I've been a hardcore TMNT fan since I was 8yrs old and the original toon came out and I've never really understood all the Venus hate. I think maybe with the character was introduced in another way she would have worked out better.

Infact I've always wondered if "Next Mutation" had been an animated series instead of a live action one would it had been received better than it was. The series had some intesting ideas that were horribly exicuted and on way too small of a budget. I picked up The "East meets West" VHS off of EBay and I didn't have too many memories of it and I was very suprised at just how cheesy the series was and how bad the special effects were most of the time the Turtles mouths didn't even move when they spoke.

Woah, my prediction (mostly) came true.

But the idea of TMNT belonging solely to Nickelodeon doesn't sit well with me. I'm anxious to see the new cartoon just to know how it will be handled and whether it will be treated respecfully or go the way of other acquisitions.

Too bad for 4kids though. That could've been another boost in profits once 2011 rolled around.

Ewww. I wish they would at least give these to someone else.

Focusing on the 80s show might not be a bad idea, especially if it has better writing than that show did.

Its a shame the show won't start till 2012...that's a really long wait.

Most of the kid fanbase from the 2k3 series will be grown up by then, whereas the original cartoon fanbase (most of us, I imagine) will be in our late 20's or early 30's.

It amazes me how there's a new TMNT show for every decade, and as a result the original fans grow older with each passing series.

They're probably going to use old toon characters and concepts, but other than that I don't this this show will be like the original series at all.

Most likely it'll be an action series for the 2000's that reimagines many original cartoon characters.

Breaks do more good than harm. This is something the Power Rangers franchise learned the hard way. The five years in-between Last Mutation and 2k3 were needed. It allowed audiences some time off to focus on other TV shows and when the new series debut there was more anticpation. Just imagine if the 2k3 had debut in, say, 2000. It wouldn't have been the same. You wouldn't have gotten the, "oh my God, it's a new TMNT show" feeling. So, the 3 year wait for the Nick show and Paramount movie will get you hyped.
