Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

WOW! Why would they sell this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? It's such a good show! Are they declaring bankruptsy or something?

In some ways, this is better for the franchise because there will be less companies involved. 4Kids, Mirage and Playmates worked together well for a few years, but then certain quarrels arose on which direction the show should go (hence, the Fast Forward reboot). Now there's only two major parties involved - Nick and Playmates - so the discussion on the direction of the franchise should be less chaotic.

Of course, Playmates was always pushing for the more comedic, juvenile interpretation of the turtles in these past years (Turtle Tots, anyone?), and that seems right up Nick's ally.

Woah.

I say that this is primarily for the Nicktoons channel to beef up their programming slate. Other than Avatar, Nickelodeon Proper hasn't had too much success with action cartoons (Remember SLAM? Exactly.) Nickelodeon will probably show something TMNT related but I think this is for Nicktoons.

Well this came out of nowhere (yet not entirely unexpected either). Not sure what to think about the purchase quite yet.

I'm assuming this solves the DVD distribution problem with Turtles Forever?

To echo MegaJ's post, I'm guessing that the new series will run on Nicktoons rather than Nick proper; Nick doesn't seem to do all that well with or be willing to run action cartoons, Avatar being the notable exception.

I'm wondering what approach the new show will take: will it be edgy and hard like the 4Kids show, or silly and cartoony like the '87 syndicated series? Or maybe a mix of both?

Mirage is over? I don't like the sound of that at all.

Peter is actually giving up the Turtles? I'm shell shocked and concerned. I wanted TMNT to live on but I'm weary of how Nickelodeon will handle the property now that they own it outright and this could also be the end of the indepent comic TMNT.

I just don't know what to think... This could work out but Mirage was always there to keep 4kids on the right track and now Mirage will have no involement after they pass it off. I guess that means we could see the 80s toon characters return full force but at what cost to the quality of the franchise?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

And along with that I'm wondering how I might be able to take part in the creation of that series slated for 2012. I've never really had the urge to seek out employement with a company to work on a property but TMNT is a franchise I hold near and dear.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about this. As a hardcore TMNT fan from the 80's who followed the franchise for 20+ years, I don't know what to think. My random thoughts:

- TMNT 2k3 is officially over after the "Turtles Forever" movie. OK, I loved this series but this is it. I hope they release it properly on DVD, as much as I'll miss it.

- Will the original TMNT cartoon still be owned by Fred Wolf? We still need Seasons 9 and 10 on DVD.

- We're getting a new CG TV series? I wonder if it could look like the 4th movie, or at least similar

- What happens to the Mirage comics?

Truly, this news is as big a shock as Disney buying Marvel. What is happening to the world? Everything from my childhood has been changed!
