Toon Zone Talkback - New "G.I. Joe" and "Transformers" Cartoon Series Being Cast

There's nothing inherently wrong with having a multiverse. It's when they decide they want to cross them over (and over and over) that you start having issues. I could do without the entire 'There's only one Primus and Unicron through the multiverse' thing though.

It would have to be a PG-13 series because of the movie-verse's obsession with robot sodomy and intercourse and bodily functions.

Im sure they could tone it down. Heck, i can see Bay himself caving in (or the studio forcing him to) and toning that down in the movie-verse after seeing all the negative reaction toward that stuff.

So true. Apparently, this "there is only one throughout the multiverse" thing even applies to The Fallen, when his movie appearance is vastly different from his comic design .

To be fair, they have created something of a credible explanation. Multiverse singularities such as Primus, Unicron, etc exist on a higher plane of existance to normal characters. Part of this is they can appear in multiple realities at once. This also means that if they are significantly hurt in one reality, it can affect them in all of them. Perfect example- Unicron being trapped/damaged in Energon by Primus is why Unicron somewhat randomly vanishes in the Transformers Universe storyline (itself basically occuring in the same continuity as Beast Wars).

In any case, I am hoping that both shows will be new continuities.

Long story short (and I don't want to debate the issue), the movies (especially the Transformers ones) fail in so many ways, it would take too long to list them all. Suffice it to say, in addition to new continuities, I hope they will have their own production values (i.e., and not simply base them on the movies). In other words, it is my hope (and partial assumption) that these new shows will be the respective franchises' way of "starting over".

Also, considering they will likely air on that new "Hub" network that will be launching this year, it must be especially pointed out that "older" viewers aren't the only ones these franchises are targeted to; that is to say, (and with all due respect) these franchises weren't made just for them. They WERE created as toy lines originally, and if the new shows do air on the new "Hub" network, it would be 99.999999999999999999999% guaranteed that they would reflect (the sanctity of) this fact (that and everyone on the G.I. Joe series would naturally be firing lasers...).

I am excited to see a new Transformers and G.I. Joe on the horizon, and I'll be sure to tune in to both.

My own master plan for a Transformers cartoon would be something that brings together all the best characters and elements from everything that has come before. They were somewhat on the right track for this in TF:A. Let me put it this way: as a Decepticon fan, the thought of seeing G1-ish Megatron and Starscream, Beast Wars-ish Blackarachnia, Movieverse-ish Barricade, and Furman-ish Bludgeon all existing in one universe would be the ultimate dream. Make it so, Hasbro. Give us the definitive Transformers cartoon for fans of all ages.

For G.I. Joe, the way to go would be either a less violent version of Resolute or something based on the movieverse.... or even a continuation of the movie if there's no sequel.

And with Hasbro running a whole network, who's to say that there's only going to be ONE Transformers or ONE G.I. Joe show, hmm? ;)

Well, actually that's incorrect. Hasbro is only running half of it (Discovery Communications is running the other half).

Personally, I'm not so sure that would work in the long run. To me, that sounds more like a tribute series who's only purpose is to make references to the previous incarnations of Transformers (G1, Beast Wars/Machines, Car Robot/Robots in Disguise, the "Unicron Trilogy", the live-action movies, and "Animated").

Oh, it was a good idea, but what it sounds like you're suggesting is that the show should be a multi-universe crossover. This presents too much of a possibility for the show to not be a true Transformers production, and instead be sarcasm (as well as being more of a "parental bonus", than a truly "all ages" series; long story). Like, I said before. This new show needs to be its own thing, with its own continuity. A multi-universe tribute would really only work as a one-shot special or something similar.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking your idea. I just think that it would only work in the short term. IMHO, the franchise needs to focus on the long term, and the best way to start would really be to "start over" as I previously said; a show where you wouldn't need to know anything about the franchise in order to get the most out of it.

As for G.I. Joe. Try to understand, the movie is just a generic action film with a recognizable license, concept, and characters. One commercial was all it took to convince me that that was not G.I. Joe. That said, IMO, a series based on that wouldn't really be fair to the franchise, or the viewers. Again, the new series needs to be its own thing, but more importantly, it needs to actually be uniquely G.I. Joe; a show based on a line of military-themed toys. In fact, why not make a show based on the original G.I. Joe* (i.e., the pre-"Real American Hero" era version)? That I think that would be truly unexpected...

*He's considered to be the original "action figure".

Oh, no no. Let me clarify. It would not be any kind of mutliverse thing at all. It would be its' own distinct universe. "Movieverse-ish Barricade" would just be a nasty Decepticon scout character who turns into a police car, not the exact same guy from the movies. I was thinking more along the lines of "Batman: TAS", in which they had roughly 50 years of Batman history to cull from and they picked out the best stuff (and added their own pieces to the mythos as well, such as giving Mr. Freeze an origin). This would be something like that. The Primus/Unicron origin would be used, Cybertronians would be established as having "sparks", and so forth. Think of it like Marvel's "Ultimate" comics. This would be "Ultimate Transformers".

And it sounds like they're actually going to be something along those lines starting with the "War for Cybertron" game. Only time will tell....

I'm excited to see new animated takes on Transformers and GI JOE. Animated has run its course.

Resolute was really good. It was cool seeing animated GI JOE in that style, but there's still room for improvement. What Resolute did a good job of doing was actually giving the story stakes. This Cobra Commander didn't mess around. Unlike that trash we have to put up with in the movies now.
