Toon Zone Talkback - Mystery Train: All Aboard "Baccano!"

I love how one of the pictures is Czeslaw bleeding all over the place.

I do so love this little gem and the currently running Durarara really makes a great successor to it.

It's true Baccano! doesn't necessarily have a great story to begin with, but the fact that the whole thing works in spite of the "unique" storytelling style is definitely a plus.

On the other hand, I didn't find the epilogue to be disappointing. I just treated it as an extra adventure that tried to wrap up a couple of loose enRAB. All while having fun.

Having written the piece that cued this talkback, I should probably state that my review was not a negative one, but rather mixed.
The storytelling style was for me definitely the most impressive element of Baccano! and it hearkens back to narrative experiments of film directors like Alain Resnais in the 1960s. Part of why I found the epilogue disappointing was because the series had done such an impressive job in welding the first 13 episodes into one long master episode that I thought they'd be able to pull off that feat for the entire series, rather than noisily shifting gears and heading off into what seemed like a vastly less consequential new story. Space considerations dissuaded me from mentioning this in my review, but the light novel series Baccano! was adapted from continued beyond the point the anime ended. So the anime was perhaps faced with the problem of where to draw the line, and chose to try adapting a small part of larger storyline. But three episodes leave one much less room to work in than 13, and without the train ride to provide a structural node these episodes seem like an anticlimax. Things might have worked out better if the show had a 26 episode run instead, consisting of two master episodes instead of a home run and a bunt.

I see where you're coming from. The OVA episodes while good in their own way aren't very much like the first 13 and feel a bit tacked on. Not much happens but we are introduced to yet another wacky character and Jaccuzi shows some more bravery I guess but compared to the series episode it's just not a fantastic follow-up.

If this were to broadcast on say... Adult Swim or IFC it may be better to leave out the OVA episodes but I suppose they ought to be included in a TV run as well since it's a shame when part of a show isn't broadcasted much less a meer 3 episodes.

Well, those last three episodes were never part of the original TV broadcast so it's not like I'm arguing they are essential or anything. To be perfectly blunt, I imagine they were intended as something of a bonus to entice viewers to buy the DVD release. It's definitely true that they're not quite as impressive as the rest of the show, by all means.

I also understand that the rest of the light novels weren't adapted and, unfortunately, it seems unlikely we'll ever see the full story in animated form.

Nevertheless, I still found those additional episodes to be enjoyable enough to be worth the investment, which is usually fair enough by my standarRAB.

I recently viewed this series and agree that's it's one of those gems that tenRAB to get overlooked. I enjoyed the OVA's at the end, probably because I liked the Chane/Claire storyline, but agree that of all of the stories to do, it seems like an odd choice.

I would have thought a story featuring Firo/Ennis or Dallas/Eva would have been used. Even the one where Isaac, Firo, and Ladd are in prison together would have interesting, and may have worked better.

But then again, that's just me.
