Toon Zone Talkback - Mike Judge Producing "Goode Family" for ABC

Well, King of the Hill is still on, but I don't see it sticking. Stuff like this screams "mid season replacement" with a cancellation quickly following.

I didn't think we'd ever see another animated prime-time series on one the big networks (except for FOX, of course). Because Mike Judge's name is on this, it'll have some high expectations attached to it. It doesn't sound like much of a premise, I don't know how much mileage can be gotten from a show about a family of do-gooders, but at least Mike Judge isn't afraid to work with human characters.

I wonder when some network will take the chance to air an animated series that's not about a family. We haven't had one of those since Futurama.

All the fault of Fox. That's why I always cringe when someone says Family Guy or American Dad is a ripoff of the Simpsons. Fox wants it that way.

And I don't have any faith in any non-Fox network airing animated programming. I can see them air 3 normally, then we'll have a 3 month break from seeing them, and they'll all be shown at once during the summer (the same shameless thing they did with Knights of Prosperity, while According to Jim keeps coming back like a bad virus).

Wrong demographic is my theory. ABC courts thirtysomething women, especially now. People that watch prime-time cartoons don't watch ABC, and those that do have grown to trust Fox above all else.

Right, hence the completely concidental and all-too-clever surname of "Goode." I want a moratorium on names like this. "Hope and Faith" was my last straw.

After what happened to 'The Critic' and 'Clerks', I don't think this show has much of a chance.

But it's Mike Judge, so I'll watch it anyway.

I actually think this may have a chance to be a modest success. Mike Judge has had a pretty good track record and I think Judge's style might work better than most animated sitcoms trying to ape Family Guy and The Simpsons.

Unfortunately, being on ABC, it might be entirely futile, but I would like to see a new Mike Judge show succeed.

But he's gonna have to make sure it has a pretty distinct separation from KotH. While the Simpsons and Family Guy were popular enough and had enough of a hard-core following to allow for the success of new shows from the same creators that had a very familiar comedic "flavor" (Futurama and American Dad), KotH just isn't on the same level as those shows in terms of popularity, despite having a relatively consistent audience.

What I'm saying is if this just turns out to be KotH "second string", so to speak, like a lot of people thought American Dad was at first, I don't see very many people bothering to watch it. Especially with the way ABC will probably treat it on their schedule.

I hope so. As much as I do like KOTH, I would love to see them do something more cartoony. KOTH is the straightest cartoon series I've ever seen, and it just seems like animated live action half the time (a distinct difference from even The Simpsons).

After finding out who Mike Judge is and what he did in animation, I think this show could do great, if it wasn't for the fact it was on ABC. They haven't had any oringinal animated series since, what?, the 80's. This might fail, due to people now thinking adult animation on big channel equals FOX. If people found out about this, they will go crazy trying to find out why it's on ABC instead of FOX.

I believe the last animated show ABC did was Stressed Eric. And I think that was about ten years ago. I think Clerks came before Stressed Eric, though I'm not sure.

I actually applied for a job at one of their other animated shows, which looks like it has next to no budget and costs slashed everywhere. The pay was awful for southern California wages, and the show itself was simply depressing to look at. Judge's show better have SOME money put into it.

Stressed Eric was in the late 90s. Clerks came 8 years ago.
