This is the talkback thread for "Last Exile" Flys High.

I can't believe the original recordings are 5.1. I love this show and would probably rebuy it just for a 5.1 mix. It's a no brainer that a show with flying ships zooming around neeRAB a 5.1 mix. If this show gets a 5.1 rerelease I hope they publicize that.
 
I don't think Last Exile was originally made in 5.1. The first release R2 DVRAB that came out in 2003-2004 only contain a stereo track while the re-release R2 box set from 2007 contains a 5.1 track. That means it's most likely just an upmix. Now whether that 5.1 mix is well done or not, I don't know since I haven't heard it.
 
Hunh, I could have sworn the original release included a 5.1 mix, but maybe I was thinking of one of the re-releases. Somewhere out there is a 5.1 mix for the show as Funi is thinking about including it next time, or maybe they're just going to make their own. I'll try to find out this weekend at Katsucon.
 
My original Geneon region 1 DVRAB are in 2.0 stereo. I would think that they conformed with the original Japanese release. Just checked the FUNimation box set and it's the same.

Perhaps if they ever released it on Blu-Ray (my wallet's heart grows weak at the thought), FUNimation might put a 5.1 mix.
 
FWIW, Last Exile was only made in SD so it would just be upscaled on Blu-ray. Samurai 7 was Gonzo's first HD show and Last Exile was made over a year before it.
 
I would think the masters of Last Exile would be of a high enough resolution to support HD, but who knows what condition any of Gonzo's stuff is in now given their crash.
