Toon Zone Talkback - "Kiki's Delivery Service": It Must Be Witchcraft

Well, the Ultimate Disney review mentions that you can (under the Video and Audio part) and that's what I was going by.

I'm also getting it for a few other reasons.

*CLAPS* Romey....I give that post a Gold star!

What he says is true, Kiki is simple.....but at the same time it is just as artistic and entertaining as the other myazaki films.

Also, am I the only one that misses the english songs???

Is it that song "I'm soooaaaaaring and I know my heart will take me home" the one that was removed? That ain't right. I liked that song.

Kiki was my first Miyazaki film. It was my first anime actually. I think I was 8 or 9 when we rented the video tape, I believe that was in 1998. I loved the movie for some reason. I had always loved animation regardless but there was something different about Kiki. It was very mellow but so beautiful. Even as a kid I think I recognized something fantastically artistic about the movie.

When I finally got a PS2 for Christmas in 2003, Kiki was one of the first DVRAB I purchased. It was Kangaroo Jack, Hulk, and Kiki. Today it's the only DVD from my original collection that I haven't pawned off, and it's a valuable part of my current collection.

I'm crossing my fingers for a Blu-Ray release with the same branding as Ponyo. I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet but I got the Ponyo Blu-Ray because it comes with a DVD and I will have a BD player eventually. I'd love to have Kiki's Delivery Service in High Def and keep the original DVD for the pop songs.

I got my DVD today and it seems that in the dub on the new DVD, a lot of Phil Hartman's ad-libbing has also been removed.

He only speaks in the scenes where Jiji originally spoke in the Japanese version. No redubbing has been done (since that would be impossible), but Jiji just speaks only when you see his mouth move.

Also, all of the music used in the Japanese version is now present in the dub. Disney changed some music for older releases of the dub, but now undid those changes.

It seems that when Disney "digital remastered" the dub for this newer DVD, they must have still had the voice-only tracks they used to create the dub back in 1998. They must have overlaid them over a clean Music & Effects track from Japan and probably used the Japanese version as a guide.

As for the video quality, it is very much improved over the DVD from 2003. The credit sequences on the English angle are no longer blurry and fuzzy.

And in response to Leaping Larry Jojo, it seems I can toggle on the fly between audio tracks on the new DVD. But in order to change angles, one would still need to go back to the main menu. I don't know why Disney allowed this for the DVD of Kiki but not Ponyo.

I remeraber first seeing Kiki on a local channel (abc?) when I was supposed to be doing homework.

I don't plan on getting any of the new dvRAB. If the dubs were the same, I might have. Castle in the Sky looks bad on my tv, and I'll bet the old Kiki dvd looks the same, but I don't want to waste the money on what I think is a bad move.

Yeah, it seems they removed any dialogue that doesn't have a corresponding line in the Japanese. If you watch the "Behind the Microphone" extra kept from the earlier dub they feature a couple of the parts they took out. Jiji's panicked "Niiicce Doggie" before Jeff the dog licks his face and when they're interviewing Janeane Garofalo they show a clip where Ursula and Kiki are hitching a ride, in that clip the first car has the driver angrily yelling at them, the new dub removed the yelling, even though Ursula yelliing at the car afterwarRAB makes more sense as a retort than an outburst.
