Toon Zone Talkback - Katzenberg Wants Five More "Kung Fu Panda" Movies

That's not potential. It's green.

If they really wanted to make a sequel that was worth making, they'd make a sequel to The Incredibles. TS3 is basically The Brave Little Toaster with toys instead of appliances. And wasn't the original Cars one of the least appreciated Pixar films ever made or at least panned by some audiences?

Still . . . five sequels to Kung Fu Panda? Egads, that's a bit much. Then again, Harry Potter's about to have film number six in a few months, and two more afterwards. James Bond's been in more than 20 official movies. Jason and Freddy have also been in multiple films.

Po is an interesting character, but he's nowhere being as culturally relevant as those theatrical icons. Plus, shouldn't the animated series negate the need to create FIVE sequels?

And for the record, Shrek and Shrek 2 both made over $200 million, with the latter becoming one of the top-five highest-grossing films of all time. Doesn't mean it's a good film. Titanic wasn't all that either.

Yeah, but the toy sales were through the roof, which is what they're hoping to replicate with a sequel. It was upon learning this little nugget that my faith in Pixar began to be shaken.

I'd register my disbelief at the notion that Kung-Fu Panda is expected to fill out five more installments without any idea of what the plots will be, but it's hard to articulate that much shock. Let's just say I'm reminded of the method of filmmaking that American International Pictures used in the 1950s - they drew their movie posters first and then wrote the movies around them.

Five more movies? Yeah. Right. I haven't seen the film myself, but I've heard some generally good things about it. Of course, after seeing the first Shrek movie, I'm not really wanting to see any of the other sequels that Dreamworks has made and are planning to release. Few movie series do well with that many sequels. Even though I did like the earlier Land Before Time sequels, none of them as good as the first one, they did start getting really weak with like the seventh one. It looks like Dreamworks wants to do to Kung Fu Panda like they're doing with Shrek: milk it for more than its worth. At least with Pixar, they don't seem to be interested in making sequels unless they are just as good or even better than the first film.

Five is WAAAAY too much. I haven't seen the film yet, but I know that the story couldn't be durable enough to stretch into five films. Just make a part II and that's it. They should've done the same to Shrek, too.

This is obviously a plan made for MONEY, not about the quality or care of the film (i.e. Disney's money-grabbing plans for High School Musicals and Camp Rock. BTW, are they THAT lazy to think of more creative titles instead of these generic ones?)

I'm willing to reserve judgment on prospective sequels, because in fact, Kung Fu Panda does in fact have the ingredients to populate five other movies: namely, the Furious Five.

Over in the main talkback thread for Panda, I commented that the dynamic of the film's character ensemble reminded me of the character dynamic between the ensemble cast of Disney's Winnie the Pooh films. I don't think this is a coincidence -- and it seems to me that it would be perfectly reasonable and natural for the producers and writers, in developing the Panda concept, to have done enough character development for each of the Five so that a movie could be built around each of those five characters.

Done right (and we can hope, though of course there's no guarantee), a cycle of films featuring each of the Five in turn could be very good indeed. Po and Shifu have had their movie; why not give their companions a turn in the limelight?

Ok I did not know there was supposed to be a series on this movie, a series I'll watch. But 5 freakin movies??? Two I understand, one after the Nick series and one to start it. But 5? Please canncle five movies, please make it just two :crying:

I personally wouldn't have an issue with a 5-movie series. As long as each of the five main characters gets their turn in the spotlight, that is.

That said, the first one ended too quickly IMO and the second needs to continue where the first left off.

Five more? They're getting a little ahead of themselves aren't they?

I'm just speechless, it's like Disney saying let's do 5 more of The Wild.

But it's called Kung Fu Panda, it's all about Po. Which makes me wonder, is he going to progress through these movies or something? What can they make up next anyway?

^ I do agree with the movie being Called Kung Fu Panda so it's only natural it focusses on Po.

And I can't really think of what else they can do with it.

The whole idea of the first movie was that a Dragon Warrior was to be chosen to defeat Tai-Lung. He's defeated. So shouldn't it be over?

Maybe a sequel, but personally, I don't feel connected to the Furious Five or like them enough to want to watch 90 minutes of backstory for each one of them.

Oh yah I saw that and was thinking the same thing. It would be kind of cute. Than agian I did like Po's relationship with the Tiger so I don't knowXD
I think maybe they can do more on Po, he's my favorite character in the film.
