Toon Zone Talkback - Katzenberg Wants Five More "Kung Fu Panda" Movies

This is hilarious. Isn't Nickelodeon getting a KFP TV series?!! They can milk more out of that than five sequels. Well, if they want to have their enormously large slice of cake and attempt to eat it all, too, then fine. But something tells me that they'll bail once Kung Fu Panda III debuts as a craptastic 81 minutes written by none of the original writers...
 
I think Kung Fu Panda could be a success, but not enough to warrant 5 sequels with its high production budget and w/o the luxury of being a Shrek sequel or having the Pixar brandname attached to it, I'm not even sure whether it'll cross $200mil. domestically or not, much less do Harry Potter numbers. Plus, it has to compete with Zohan, The Incredible Hulk and Wall-E as well!
 
Wait, isn't the Nick series supposed to expand on the story after the movie? After all, five more movies would be equal to 21 episodes in length. :sweat: Oh well, this isn't going to end well. And stop it will your stupid Shrek/Pizar thing now. All that really maters at this point is that it's Dreamworks. You should change that to Dreamworks/Pixar now.
 
The fact that there is a series coming out still irks me. Po's arc is over. He set out to do what he needed. We don't need to see what other dangers or trials he has to encounter as the new protector of the valley...we can just imagine it. It's a sad day when Dreamworks, who was supposed to be the upstart anti-Disney, becomes more money grubbing than the Mouse House.

Seriously though 5 movies? Man Jeff Katzenberger either is trying to be the next Master *Cough*Michael Eisner*Cough*, or maybe he just wants to surpass "The Master"..But I'm in agreement here.. This can not Bode well for Po the Panda. Also if KFP is doing so well, I could see maybe 1 sequel but 5? Is he serious?

And then of course we have to worry about "The big green guy" Namely The Incredible Hulk, "the Little Robot Guy", namely Wall*E, and "the big ugly red guy from Heck" Namely Hellboy 2...

Can we say Panda Skin Rug? I knew we could!

It was fun watching Kung Fu Panda, but if they do that I won't be humoring them simply because of Dreamworks' history. They've thrown away the benefit of the doubt that they can do anything besides writing subpar sequels.
 
Ahh, but you see, I'm using "Pixar/Shrek" as a reference to the bunch of animated feature films that never have managed to crack the magical $200mil. mark domestically and there are only 2 of them that ever managed to do so and they were both Aladdin and Lion King.

"Kung Fu Panda" has the potential to be just as successful as "Shrek". In fact, it's opening weekend was about the same level as the original "Shrek"'s opening weekend when the 2001 number is adjusted for inflation. Chances are, "Panda" will have good enough word of mouth that, when the inevitable sequel is released, it will be much bigger than the first and perhaps on the level of Shrek 2 or Shrek The Third's opening weekends. So, yeah, it's good to see that Dreamworks realizes they've got a good thing going here and that they can make it successful.

With that said...

FIVE???

That's a borderline ridiculous expectation... talk about counting your chickens before they hatch. As mentioned above, "The Incredible Hulk" will take the edge off the grosses of "Panda" for the next two weeks and then there will be a new animated creature in town by the name of "Wall*E". It will all come down to word of mouth, and Katzenberg shouldn't ASSUME that the word of mouth WILL be good enough to make a sequel a profitable venture.
