This is the talkback thread for It Came From the Great White North!.

In my defense, Animation Express was a "best hits" compilation, so I think the hit-to-miss ratio was artificially raised. And even though I'm kind of used to the sort of non-linear, unfocused folk tales of a lot of Native American and Inuit people, I didn't really care much for "How People Got Fire" either.
 
Yeah a lot of things by the NFB is really just WEIRD. But the good stuff...damn!

I wonder why they didn't put The Sand Castle in that greatest hit collection you reviewed Ed. Its a classic and it also won an Oscar.
 
+1, I could also add other NFB classics like "The Sweater" where a kid dream to have the all-new sweater of the Montreal Canadiens with the #9 weared by Maurice Richard but received the sweater of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Or that other classic who was often shown in schools when I was young, "The Great Toy Robbery" when some bandits stolen Santa Claus's presents in the Far-west http://www.nfb.ca/film/the_great_toy_robbery/

Not animated, but worth to mention is "The Railrodder" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Railrodder who starred Buster Keaton in one of his final films
 
Hey, where were all you guys when I reviewed the Animation Express collection originally? :p

That being said, I think the answer to "Why wasn't X included" on that release was because I think it was a "greatest hits of the past few years," not "greatest hits." They're not referenced on the discs in this review because these were the latest Hothouse releases (plus "How People Got Fire" as a standalone DVD).
 
Honestly Ed I have no idea ^^; I guess I missed that one... sorry.


I saw Madame Tutli-Putli in theatre when I went to see the documentary Up the Yangtze. It was very haunting and troubling...I'm not sure I 'get' it but it was pretty good.
