Toon Zone Talkback- "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown" 12/30 @ 8/7c on ABC

I thought that this was a cute special, but it didn't have that same charm that the classic Peanuts specials had. I actually don't think that I've seen this special before yesterday. I was amazed that Charlie Brown had to read War and Peace over winter break. I know it was "Moby Dick" in the comic strip, but it was still a surprise that any child that young would read a book that huge. Peppermint Patty's voice did sound high-pitched to me too, but I got used to it. My favorite parts were when Snoopy and Woodstock were all dressed up a day early for the party and when Rerun was blowing up square balloons.

The little red-hair girl getting a name and being shown were interesting parts as well. There was always that sense of mystery about her since she was never named or drawn in the comic strip and I did kind of liked that. I can understand why Mr. Schulz wouldn't like that change later on considering his original idea for the girl. Still, it was pretty interesting to see.

While the special was overall enjoyable, it made me feel too depressed at the end for Charlie Brown. I know that he doesn't really get much of anything his way, but it felt like it went overboard with this special. He's the only one who worries about this book report, yet he still ends up with a lousy grade, he gets the nerve to finally invite the little red-hair girl to the dance only to miss her when he falls asleep outside, Peppermint Patty yells at him for leaving her alone at midnight when she was the one who left him high and dry outside in the first place and even Sally blamed him for Linus not dancing with her. It just felt like they went overboard with Charlie Brown not having anything go his way. At least Marcie was nice to him as always and gave him a friendly kiss. It was cute, yet nowhere near as good as the classic specials, and I just felt way too sad for Charlie Brown.
