Toon Zone Talkback - "Halo: Legends": Halo, I Must Be Going

Problem is you bolded the wrong word, after all I said "It always seems", that makes it obvious I don't mean "always" literally.

Anyways I don't read many Toon Zone reviews, I doubt I read more than 4 a year and out of all the ones I've read plenty of times I've found my self thinking how they didn't understand the movie/franchise, weren't a fan of the genre itself or other similar things. Of course I don't remember which ones, I don't really care enough to remember what reviews Toon Zone did a poor job on, not to mention a lot also seem sensationalist just to gather a few eyeballs. I haven't read the Halo review and don't plan to, I already read one from a non-animation and non-halo fan that liked it and he's is an opinion I trust. But yeah I've read other "controversial" reviews from Toon Zone to know this isn't the first time its been done.

Even you Ed are a little biased towards the good ol'days and it shows through your posts. That doesn't mean you can't review anything modern or whatever, I thought the Turok review you did was good but I don't think Halo would be your thing. And while not intentional it does seem to happen frequently.

I was going to address why it doesn't matter which word you emphasize in your sentence for it to still be wrong, but then I read the rest of your post and have to make sure I understand correctly. You read at best 2.6% of our reviews output in a year, you haven't read the review we're talking about OR seen the DVD it's about, and have been presented with a substantial amount of hard evidence directly to the contrary of everything you say. And yet, you still insist on telling us how we do things on the News staff AND seem to think you know what I like and dislike, attempting to mitigate your claim by citing a title that I didn't review.

At this point, unless there's some germane fact somewhere that I missed, I'm just going to say, "OK, you're entitled to your opinion," because I really see no point in further discussion. I will not presume to inject any further facts or contrary evidence to try and alter your perceptions, if you would do me the favor of not telling me what my biases are.

I don't have to read every review to be able to make a good , if the few reviews I've read over the years ended up having similar problems I think its safe to assume it happens a lot of the time, either that or I just have the rotten luck of only ending up reading those which probability says it is highly unlikely. The fact that I haven't read the review is irrelevant to my comment since I was only stating to other posters how I've seen it happen before. And you're right I got confused, however you did write a small review on the talkback thread which is what I was recalling. And like I briefly mentioned, I could care less about this argument to have to cite my sources, if I cared enough to disprove the integrity of something or get people to believe me I would but I don't. I probably should to prove my point since I really have no reason to lie when I say something but yeah I can't see myself doing it.

Sdp, this is a talkback thread for a particular review posted on rabroad. Talkbacks are for people who have read/watched/played whatever the subject of talkback is to talk back about it. If you have not read the review in question, then by definition anything you have to say on the subject is off-topic. Therefore, if you wish to continue to post in this thread, you need to go read the review. If you do not care to read the review, then you are free to stop posting on this thread.

If you want to discuss rabroad's reviews in general as opposed to this review in particular, you are free to start a Feedback and Suggestions thread on the subject. However, for your opinion on that subject to mean anything, you would have to read a representative sample of rabroad's reviews. Four a year is not a representative sample.

This is not a request. Either read the review so that you can have an informed, on-topic discussion with the rest of us, or stop posting in this thread. Thank you.

I honestly didn't have a problem with the review. Maybe he started to ramble and take jabs in some parts, but I didn't detect any real malice from it. In fact, I actually ended up seeing Halo:Legends while over a friends house and agree with the sentiment.

You really don't have to have prior knowledge of Halo to understand the shorts, since Origins is pretty much a summary. Odd Man Out with Spartan 1337 was a cute change of pace, but everything else pretty much blended together. I give it a 2 out of 5.

Lighten up. Some of you people sure are defensive over something you didn't even watch and have no interest in seeing.:p

Hmm... well, I did see it. (about two weeks before this review written) So, that's one thing you've gotten wrong.

The second is this: It's more the fact that it was badly written review than the fact that he didn't like the movie that most don't like this review. If you're writing for a decently big site, you should have some semblance of objectiveness or fairness. People aren't arguing that it's a bad review because he didn't like Halo Legends; they (well, me) are arguing that his review lacks tact. His review was just a massive tirade against Halo, its fans, and pretty much anyone who has ever enjoyed Halo.

I don't know about you, but I don't like to be insulted.

1) What GWOtaku said.

2) This is where I disagree. Nevermind the fact that he went out of his way to play Halo even though it wasn't required. Whether he liked it or not, that's dedication. Nevermind the fact when he actually got to the shorts, he liked two, going so far as to say he would actually like a animated series with the same energy as Odd Man Out and said that the Babysitter was a "taut piece of dramatic film making", Let's zero in on offhand comments and dismiss the entire review!

If you thought the beginning of it and some parts were a tad harsh or just didn't find the jokes funny, I understand. But " a massive tirade against Halo, its fans, and pretty much anyone who has ever enjoyed Halo."?

..Really?! It just comes off as taking it too seriously.

Personally, I prefer my reviews to be honest and reflective of what they actually felt instead of straining for something nice to say , but that's just me.

Revenge of the Fallen was reviewed by me. So if you have any beef with that, take it up with me. I know that review wasn't well received (I actually got some hate mail for it).

I took a look at the Halo review and I'm not seeing what's so bad about it. My personal feeling is that there are two real sides to the complaints- 1. Biased fans who are mad Maxie didn't say this made him moist. 2. People who would have preferred less personal indulgence and more focus on the title. I'm more sympathetic to the latter complaint but people need to understand that the review staff cover a large volume of titles. It's natural that in writing a review we will on ocassion wish to experiment somewhat and try new things. Personally, I like it when a reviewer brings a cheeky sense of humour and don't think Maxie's lead in makes him sound like the wrong person at all. If you want that, go read a Halo fansite's review or such. The fact is that TZ is a general animation site. The news staff may have personal interests but I'd like to think we tackle all titles from a broad perspective. Maxie is more than valid in his opinion that this title doesn't seemingly hold up for non-Halo fans. He doesn't even trash it- there are clearly parts of the review where he says he enjoyed certain shorts and wished to see more.

We will always welcome feedback and try to improve from it. But really, this sounds like alot of moaning over nothing. Plus given that half of you are taking shots at the apparent lack of authourity of the front page anyway, why are you complaining? You can't say that we're putting out bad press and then say no one reads it anyway. That doesn't make any sense.

I dont play Halo and have an Xbox too! I do recognise its place in the xbox world but FPS games and their nitty-gritty stories never worked for me

To be fair I found this review useful because if the shorts/DVD feature had been perfectly accessible to anyone but the fans I might of considered looking into it. The most successful media tie-ins to games are ones that assume from get go that they are picking up a potental new audience and make efforts to properly accommodate them for the ride. Not to mention the many Halo players who bearly pay attention to the story that is present in the games.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but as I recall Animatrix was reviewed generally from the view you might not be in the know mostly? I tend to recall that compolation also suffered because despite some good shorts the rest were confusing or required you to be in the know a lot.

The review did finish that *fans* would enjoy it. Its just casuals may be left scratching their heads or bored. Theres nothing more irritating that watching something that assumes your totally in the know about stuff they mention when your not. If the thing your supposed to know is earlier in the series or something then fair dues but if you need to look it up just to enjoy it then I think thats a big problem.

Advent Children had its own slightly confusing backstory, but the main story was generally self contained and the rather impressive action scenes and character portrayals more than make up for that anyway. If Halo Legends was as good it would pull it off but if the animation and characterization isn't up to scratch in all the shorts then thats no good.
