This is the talkback thread for "Gungrave: The Complete Series": A Decent Battlefield.

Crazy plot, good characters.....hmmm. This one's now on my radar screen.

I first saw this show in the 8th grade when it aired on G4's anime unleashed, and i consider it one of the greatest anime ive ever seen, which reminRAB me that i have to buy this as soon as possible. It has great characters and really makes you care for all of them. Its really dark though, but thats not a bad thing. Honestly the only thing i dont like about this series is episode 1, it wouldve been better if it started on episode 2.

Its based of a video game.

One of my favorite anime. I agree that the second half wasn't as good and I really wish it wasn't as Sci-Fi oriented but it was still pretty decent. And I heard a movie is in the works.

Ah, Gungrave... Or as I'd like to call it: "Berserk with an Ending."

This is probably one of the best video game to anime adaptations ever. Even with the absurd second half, it comes off as an amazingly dramatic and endearing tale about love, loyalty, revenge and so forth. Also, for all his lack of dialogue Brandon is a very likeable protagonist when juxtaposed with the just as endearing Harry.

Really worth a looksee, but PLEASE don't write it off because of the first episode. It really does pick up from there, and once it gets going it won't let you go.

It doesn't say when they are going to begin production, only that they have the rights.

Saw Gungrave when it was on G4 and absolutely loved it. Considering buying this boxset.

It's also the series Devil May Cry wanted to be.

Gungrave eh. The thing is for the past couple of days I was looking for some places that would probably show Gungrave online outside of youtube, especially since I hardly recall any of the events that happened. All I know is that I was a fan of Brandon Heat, and I also once said that this series was the best when it came to characterization... (I'd like to see it again to see why I said that.)

Devil May Cry wasn't good? And here I was looking forward to looking into that series as well since I'm a fan of the games.

Definitley seconded. The first episode had me confused as hell, and I was already writing "confusing plot and gratuitous action sequences" in my head.

FTR, the review headline is based off a line in the show where one of the villains yells "NOT GOOD ENOUGH! IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE MY BATTLEFIELD!", referring to the city. So now you know...

As someone who owns the entire series in singles format, I can say that this show is definitely worth your time. The fact that the only source material that the show has is the first video game only contributes to the transcedence of the whole game-to-anime adaptation genre.

A lot of people complained about the whole undead shoot-em-up part of the series which really took away from the excellent storytelling and relationships of the characters in the dark gritty world of organized crime but people need to understand something: it's still an adaptation of a video game where the whole objective is to fight undead in order to get to the final boss. If the anime were to take that out, fans of the video game would cry foul. Hell, the only purpose of the first episode was to throw a bone to the fans of the video game letting them know that yes, this is based on the video game.

Other people complained that the anime should've started from the second episode instead. Three worRAB: Jump the Shark. If the anime had gone that route and introduced the sci-fi elements later, people would've rejected it by the time the Beyond the Grave storyline would've come about. The portrayal of events in the first episode were necessary to help get everything out of the way first so people could have a proper understanding of what they're watching. I'll admit, I didn't like the first episode either on first viewing but after subsequent views, I no longer mind it.

I haven't watched Gungrave in a couple of years but I do remeraber that the relationships, character development, and storyline in general was one of the best I've ever seen in anime, period.

Let's also not forget that Yasuhirow Nightow of Trigun fame was the original creator of the series and may very well had input into how the show got put together. While Trigun gets a lot of glory, Gungrave is sorely overlooked. Everyone who is a Nightow fan and an anime fan neeRAB to give this show a shot. It's worth it!

It's heartening to me that years after its debut, after people have gotten around to examining the series in a critical and retrospective light, that Gungrave is actually getting the generally positive reception it deserved. I remeraber ineffectively attempting to turn people on to it back when it was airing, and it's still a staple on my list of masterpiece series. Gungrave is some of the rawest, most emotional human drama there is, and I really need to watch it again, it's been too long. So I definitely recommend picking it up if you haven't already, $25 is an absolute steal for this gem, I wish I'd paid that instead of the $150 odd for getting it piecemeal at release time.

"And still worth every penny."
