Toon Zone Talkback - "Guardians of Luna" Preview: Good Moon Rising

The animation is crisp and clear, the premise is good, and I like the mixing of the sci-fi and fantasy elements around this plotline.

I would be curious as to watch a few episodes myself, but again, yes, I am surprised no network has picked this up yet. So on CN, they'd rather bombard us with "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" over and over with repeats?

Seriously, I am certainly willing to give this series a shot if it's picked up.

Here's an early poster.

'nother screencap

I remember reading about this series almost two years ago when I was looking up stuff about Gargoyles and was curious what Michael Reaves might be up to. I've kept tabs on it, looked up its progress every few months.

Looks very promising. A while back I exchanged a few messages with an actor by the name of Adam Wylie, who voices the youngest character, on his personal sites's message board and he said he'd recorded all 26 eps. I wonder how many of 'em are animated at this point.

They've signed Paul Menichini as sound designer for the show. He's a 7-time Golden Reel winner who's worked on Lost, 24, Babylon 5, and Invader Zim. I've seen and loved (or at least liked) the first three of those shows, so we at least know that this series will have excellent production values as far as sound is concerned (and writing, with Michael Reaves involved). Have yet to see Invader Zim, those DVDs are expensive (though the "house" boxset is very cool).

They should have get helped for Canadians. If it was considered CanCon Teletoon would have been all over it and already airing it three times a day

Hehehe CanCon humor.

You can see clips of this show now on the production company's website. Check out Cybergraphix's demo reel here: http://www.cybergraphix-anim.com

I think it looks real promising so far. Definitely some money and real love going into this.

Because I hadn't checked out their site since last spring, I also missed the following news item:

07/20/06
Today Cybergraphix Animation announced that it is partnering up with U.S. manga publisher DRMaster Publications (http://www.drmasterbooks.com) to release a manga adaptation of the upcoming sci-fi anime series Guardians of Luna. DRMaster Publications has plans to launch the manga both domestically and in Japan.

The manga will diverge from the animated series storyline in order to give readers a different take on some of the events which occur in the show. An "Episode 0" issue is currently [as of July `06] in production and will debut on the launch of the official Guardians of Luna website. This issue is a prequel to the animated series, and will explain some of the background behind the conflict from the point of view of the show's main villain, Constantine Voira.

Great, a manga tie-in/expansion of the story (hopefully Michael Reaves gets to/wants to write it). Now all we need is for the series to actually find a network and start airing already. I've been periodically obsessing over the prospect of how great this series could be every few months for the past three years now. I'm glad to see it hasn't been buried.

Ameri-Manga, huh? That sadly crushes any hopes I had for this series. I've yet to read one that I've enjoyed. None of them seem as good as an actual comic or a manga and focus more on a gimmicky style mix between the two.

How does it crush your hopes? The Ameri-Manga is a different take from the animated series. If anything, just ignore the comic.

I'm still surprised that no network has picked it up yet.

Well, I guess I meant the comic. Guess I should have been more clear, because I assumed the show wasn't picked up and they opted for a comic instead. (like the Gargoyles one instead of making new episodes)

Same poster/promo image as the one from a long while back, but at least an official website is finally up. Hopefully that means the series has been picked up and really will be airing in 2007 some time. Would be disappointing if it was just to promote the comic.

The manga won't be Ameri-manga, but rather the publisher and Cybergraphix Animation are working with manga artists in Japan to bring an authentic manga feel to the comic. The writing is done by the series writers, so hopefully it won't disappoint anyone out there.

Almost forgot!! There is going to be a web page about Gurdians of luna and, although I cant remmember the web site a the moment, there is a web page that you can see part of the new show. Its in a preivious post by Kris (the 9th post).

Here's the most recent update from the Guardians of Luna blog...

It's still happening, they're still trying to make it happen. It can take years to get something like this going. In this show's case, it is taking years. Eventually if it keeps hitting snags (or if it goes through another redesign in art style and tone), I imagine they'll give up, but it's got Michael Reaves behind it and he's gotta have some pull in the industry. So I don't think they'll give up without a fight, since it seems like they really believe in the project.
