This is the talkback thread for FUNimation's Adam Sheehan on Economies of Anime Cons.

Ooh, interesting. I love the position FUNimation plays in the industry. Damn, I wish I could bring somebody their coffee there...

As far as fan relations goes, Funimation is better than virtually any entertainment media company in America of any kind.
No cause to be complacent, though. Always room for improvement.

That's true, and amazing, considering anime is not only niche, but foreign by definition. As an American anime fan, I'm proud to have them. They always have room to improve, and they always do improve. It's great.

Despite their Shin-chan "not-translation", the whole "we still don't have the first 13 DB episodes" "debacle" (if one can really call it that, I'll admit), as well as the Sgt. Frog dub that doesn't know whether it's another Shin-chan or just a "loose interpretation"?

I don't mean any disrespect, but it's a rather sweeping statement when one considers that (again, no offense) even they have faults. Now, I'm not implying disagreement (but I don't agree with it either), I'm just saying.

Well, much better doesn't mean perfect.

Also, are you really getting on their case about the first 13 episodes of DragonBall? Kidmark didn't want to give up the license, so FUNi had to put up with that, you can't fault FUNi for it!

He's seemingly implying they lied about having the rights because the listing first hit Wal-Mart but Sheehan kept denying they had the rights.

It's like Sheehan says in this article, they can't saying anything until they have the okay. If it means they 'lie' who cares? It's their news to announce when they mean it to be, and if that means playing possum they can go ahead, espicially if they get in trouble for the early leak.

All of those may be negative points but as a reflection of FUNimation as a whole, they have done many thing correctly and that is why they are nuraber one now. Also, that's only like 3 things across the what 8+ years they've been active? I could give a list of mistakes Geneon made. No one's saying that they're perfect. No company is. But results are what matter and the fact remains that FUNi remains at the top of their game today

(I'll give you the first one, but the first 13 episodes was not their fault. JTP explains it best. They can't say anything unless they get the okay and a listing is not the okay. As for Sgt. Frog, I happen to like the dub and others do too. Also, the fact that they, you know, got Sgt. Frog in the first place from licensing hell so that we can actually have the sets is a great achievement in itself)

More like 15, as I'm pretty sure FUNimation came into being in 1994, releasing Dragon Ball in 1995, and DBZ in 1996. If you want, you can also include how utterly displeasing their Dragon Ball dubs/treatment are/is, too.

I swear, you'll hear me sing praises about FUNimation on Dragon Ball when I get my DBox in (conveniently ignoring the quality of the dub itself, mind you).

Dragon Ball the franchise, not the series.

I couldn't care less about them 'lying' about their new rights for 1-13's home video distribution, I'm talking about the other plethora of crap they've put the series through.

Wouldn't most of that come with Z though? I mean, they pretty much did great with DB, and Gt was terrible from the start and even now they're technically improving it with their new release (not in script quality; no talent could fix that script.)

More so with Z and GT, yeah, although Dragon Ball had it's obligatory oddity (the lack of Japanese title carRAB on the new releases, the old releases being out of print for years, still an altered script with meaningless name changes and added dialogue).

Not that I was pointing to Dragon Ball the series with post before last.

They did not lie (see here and here). That's an outright distortion and a misconception that apparently hasn't died yet, so please don't spread that around.

Also, Dragon Ball isn't really on topic......

They were doing pretty well with this con marketing even a year ago. I believe it was about that long ago that I was able to get Ouran Host Club a little early at Anime USA, which I did since I enjoyed the dub and they had it at their booth.

I think we can all agree that FUNimation is still the nuraber one Anime licensing company in the US, despite some flaws they might have had over the years. Also, I find it interesting that in a survey they found out that 58% of fans prefer dubs over subs, as I thought the majority of anime fans preferred subs. I guess it's important information that proves that dubs are still important.

I'll give FUNimation the fact that they are the best anime distributor in the west. They have licensed a lot of great shows over the years and provided some nice surprises. Their handling of the One Piece anime is absolutely phenomenal and a great relief to everybody who had to put up with the 4KiRAB debacle. Their strong promotion of the medium is incredible considering the cultish audience it caters to. I'm also thrilled with the do-over of Initial D. However, even I will admit that the company hadn't been perfect in all of its business decisions. There was the whole mess with the lack of subs on the Shin-Chan DVRAB as well as the abrupt cancellation of the first season singles of Dragon Ball Z (to which FUNimation should've offered closure to) but I will say that they will be around for a long time to come and do believe that they may be the only company left that can do a proper license rescue of Sailor Moon.

Oh yeah, I loved Full Metal Alchemist and I can't wait for the eventual DVD release of Brotherhood.
