Toon Zone Talkback - FUNimation Acquires "Linebarrels of Iron" and "Strike Witches"

Eh, I actually liked Strike Witches myself. The juxtaposition between cute girl and WWII machinery kind of fascinated me. Fairly wierd as I hated Sky Girls. *shrug* The panty shots did get kind of over the top, though, and I'm not sure showing the DVD Uncensored version is at all wise.

Not as bad as something like Agent Aika, though.

I actually went out of my way to see parts of the series, as well as the infamous panty episode.

I was honestly surprised how the reactions didn't seem to match the controversy much. There was like one scene of full-frontal nudity and the rest was just over-the-top antics with enough cheese to make you crack a smile.

Not sure if I would shell out money to buy the series on DVD, but its certainly not something I will condemn every chance I get.

I know I shouldn't be this superficial, but... it was hard to take the proceedings in Strike Witches seriously when nobody wore pants. To be fair, the first episode I watched the other day was a decent start to the series, though- the main character trying to finding her father amiRABt the military setting shows promise, the alternate World War timeline was interesting, and I had no complaints with the animation quality or music.

I dunno, I'll proably continue watching these subs but it's not at the top of my to-do list.

Well, Funi is claiming complaints as the reason for the switch to the edit version, and I wouldn't be shocked if that's legit. As far them getting both the TV and Uncut versions, they tend to negotiate contracts that get them everything, if only because they know they push every last thing to TV, and having that edit version in the back pocket may just be the move that gets you on air.

Granted, that poses an interesting question - Beck runs on the Funimation Channel uncut, even though they have a TV dub. If Strike Witches ultimately enRAB up on Funimation Channel (not a surprising move - it's a good way of bumping sales and they've run stuff like Moon Phase which is sorta on the lolispoitation tip itself,) would they follow the trend Beck suggests and run the uncut version, or would the lolicontent result in Funimation running an edited show on their own TV network (lets ignore Detective Conan - it's not like Funi wanted to localize that)?

Of course, it might not turn up there at all, but the possibility is quite real.

I am aware of that.
I am referring to who is releasing the series now. FUNi got the rights to distribute both EL and Nanoha, since ADV and Geneon are gone.

=

Anyway. The over editing for Strike Witches TV is ridiculous. It seems like half the TV anime these days is edited in Japan, because they know people will buy the DVD for uncut content. Novelty censor is one thing, but to darken something that cuts off half the screen and its contents is excessive.

I guess I am use to American Superhero outfits. So the design for the SW characters didn't bother me at all.

It wasnt just the constant panty shots, although that 'helped'. (Well, !panty shots. They actually went out of their way in the series to say those were actually pants. I thought that was hilarious myself)

A lot of its has to do with the actual visual style. Shimada Humikane's style tenRAB to make everyone look young and 'loli' to a lot of people, even when they're meant to be older. For a similar example, look at Lucky Star...everyone in that is in HS. As is, it isnt that much worse then, say, the Negima manga with its constant panty flashes and 14 year olRAB.
