Toon Zone Talkback - DreamWorks Unveils Movie Schedule Through 2012

Will Shrek Forever After be the last Shrek film? I think the series is on its deathbed, personally. Although I'm groaning at the abundance of sequels (A third Madagascar? And then there's the plot. Are we talking about a CGI Dreamworks film or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago?)I'm salivating over Guardians. Dreamworks needs to shift gears away from the sequels and focus more on original content. I see in Dreamworks the potential for a great, Pixar-esque studio, a pioneer in theatrical animation. But, to be blunt, Dreamworks won't get anywhere unless it grows a pair and takes a risk with original, zero-sequel content.

Considering the widespread concensus about how subpar the third film was, you'd think that would be it.

As for the news, almost every Dreamworks film I have ever seen has underwhelmed me. They just completely lack the life that Pixar movies have.
 
Well, I've never been too impressed with the first Shrek film and I've heard that they just get weaker in every sequel. I do find the title How to Train Your Dragon interesting, if only because I really liked dragons, but I'm not sure if I would actually go to theaters to see it. I may after reading more about it and seeing a trailer, but that's about all that really strikes me as being interesting.
 
The way DreamWorks is milking their cash cow, its' udders are going to be pretty sore tomorrow.


The Shrek franchise jumped the shark with Shrek the Third, so I'll definitely be skipping the next sequel and prequel.

I still haven't seen any of the Madagascar films yet, so I can't comment on them, though they do appear to be reaching for ideas for them.

I enjoyed Kung Fu Panda very much, but I'm worried that a film sequel AND the upcoming TV series based on the film will add up to KFP overload. I just hope KFP doesn't become over-saturated and degenerate into a cheesy parody of itself the way Shrek has done.

The other films sound unique, but nothing that I'd pay to see in theaters.
 
I agree. Shrek 6 is certain in my eyes. As you've said, Dark, it's been said by numerous Dreamworks staff that they plan for Shrek Six. if they plan on getting a sixth gallon from their big ol' cash cow, they're not going to back down. This movie, regardless of quality, wil shoot to the top.

I'm on the fence about Oobermind. On one hand, we could be getting an hour and a half of a watered-down Syndrome clone. On the other hand, it's original content, and it has Tina Fey. I'll probably be eating crow in a few months for this, but it looks good.

I wish I could look forward to the next movies in the Shrek, KFP, & Madagascar series' but Shrek & Madagascar's sequels haven't been nearly as good as the originals and I'm worried that KFP's won't be great either. And as for the rest of the movies, as Radical Raven said, the only one that sounds good to me is "The Guardians."
 
Oobermind actually does sound pretty interesting. The concept sounds Moore-esq, and Robert Downey Jr has been able to prove himself to be a strong character actor in the past year alone, which is exactly what I would be hoping for in a celebrity voice actor. While we're not going to get a story as dark, powerful, or symbolic as Alan Moore could write, I think the movie still has a decent amount of potential.
 
The only one I look forward to out of the bunch is KFP sequal. I loved the first film, I just hope they have a good story planned out here. I can't stand Shrek now :sweat:
 
Besides the non-sequel movies, I look forward to KFP: Kaboom of Doom.

Dreamworks films aren't as good as Pixar's, but they're pretty entertaining. People seem to enjoy them, and I think it's great that another non Disney studio is doing good in the industry.
I hope the Shrek sequels will stop, they'll keep making it when they stop making money from it. I look forward to Puss in Boots, though.
 
Woah woah woah there. You're comparing Dreamworks to Alan Moore? I know, supervillian automatically equals Watchmen which automatically equal Moore, but c'mon. ;)

Kidding aside, I've never seen Iron Mann (never been a big Marvel fan, apart from the Ultimate line and WATXM) but it seems like Downey has enough spark to do this role and not be bland like all the characters in every other Dreamworks film (apart from Puss and Skipper).

And now that I think about it, I may be looking forward to the Puss movie, especially if it's a prequel. Is there any confirmation as to what this movie is about and when it takes place? And for that matter, do we know what Shrek 4 is about and if Artie will be in a lead role? If so, will Justin Timberlake do his voice?
