This is the talkback thread for "Dragonball Z: Dragon Box 2" Did You Buy the First One?.

To answer the question, no, I didn't.

I'll probably go out and buy the all the Dragon Boxes when they all come out, even though this part is mostly filler, I will still buy Volume 2 since I never owned the entirety of Dragon Ball Z in my life, and the Dragon Boxes make it a perfect chance for me to do so. As for DBGT and DB, not so much since I'm fine with the their brick releases as it is, since FUNi didn't screw that up like they did with the Orange Bricks.

It's not 'mostly filler' so much as the canon material is drawn out.

But yeah, I bought the first one. And the second, and the third...

It's a fair enough review. DBZ has been released and rereleased so many times that no matter how good a new release is (and the Dragon Box is very, VERY good), it's only going to be worth a purchase for a subset of the fandom. Unless something radically changes, every DBox review is going to boil down to, "Don't already own the series? Not happy with the video quality on the orange bricks? Buy it! Not interested in DBZ? Happy with your orange bricks? Holding out for Kai? Don't buy it!"

Well, this the first time you're getting a proper release of most of these episodes that aren't butchered and bleached to all hell and back. I'm not sure many people even have the Pioneer release of "these episodes" either...

Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball GT seems to be the only series/franchise besides Neon Genesis Evangelion that I don't mind rebuying. For Dragon Ball Z have the original edited Pioneer releases containing episodes "1"-"53", the FUNimation Uncut singles from episodes "54"-"276", the nine Ultimate Uncut releases from FUNimation containing the first 3/4 of the Saiyan/Vegeta Saga, the 9 orange brick season sets with the widescreen formatted picture, and am currently collecting the Dragon Box Z sets. I also have the first 3 films released by Pioneer, the 13 films as released by FUNimation the first time, the two specials, and all of the steel cased releases of the specials and movies. I will also be purchasing Dragon Ball Z Kai upon its release. I don't know what it is about the series/franchise, but I can't get enough of it. If there is ever another release, I could see myself purchasing it yet again if it's anything different from previous releases.

I can say that the Dragon Box Z sets have the best quality picture I have ever seen for the series, and I am satisfied with my purchase of the first 2 of what will probably be 7 sets. The hardcover books are also very cool little premiums. I'm not saying that they alone encourage the purchase, though. They are in no way on their own worth the $40-80 you will spend on each set, depending on where you purchase them. Whether you've purchased Dragon Ball Z once or not at all, I can say that if you want to own the series in its original format, uncut, and restored to look brand new, this is the way to go, at least until the next release if there is one.

Personally, I had already sunk my money into the first three Orange Brick sets before the Dragon Boxes were announced, so I'm wary of repurchasing those episodes in any other format just yet. I won't start buying these until probably Dragon Box 4 (I don't have some of the episodes that are on the third set, but the majority will be episodes I already have).

I realize the Dragon Boxes are much better quality and a much better investment, but this is coming from someone who already is investing a lot of his money into many other releases (mainly One Piece at the moment). I'll get around to getting the first few Dragon Boxes when I feel the time is right, but for now, I'll just stick to the Orange Bricks for the Saiyan and Namek arcs.

Ah, Namek. The very first syndicated DBZ episode that I saw was the one where Zarbon beat the stuffing out of Vegeta.

Y'know, in hinRABight, I'd agree Namek is a bit of a drag at times with its cat-and-mouse games. It certainly helps that Frieza spenRAB most of his time just watching stuff happen for awhile. It gets much more focused and entertaining once Vegeta recovers and escapes Frieza's ship, I think.

I still haven't bought Vol. 1 yet but just to satisfy my curiosity, is Chala Head Chala still replaced on the english track?

No, I didn't buy the first one nor this one. I saw one at Best Buys recently and I'm sorry to say that, even if the quality of these releases is high, the way they market these things seem to be blatantly pandering to hardcore otakus and DBZ purists who want to own the "true version" of the anime. Which I find offputting for some reason.

So yeah, I'm content with my orange bricks too.

Not to make y'feel bad, but their marketting campaign for the Orange Bricks said the exact same things, except they were lying and doing it in as 'professional' a tone as possible. And with less stupid memes that fans of the original version don't even like.

I have not bought the Dragonboxes and don't know if I should since they are coming out with seasons of the Dragonball Z Kai. Made to more closely follow Toriyama's original manga.

"Of course!" - M. Bison

...And?

But seriously, think about it: Who were the ones who were most vocal about the immensely poor quality of the season sets?

The hardcore otaku and DBZ purists. This release is tailor-made for them so its only fitting that they push it towarRAB that demographic.
