This is the talkback thread for "Dragonball" Seasons 1 and 2: No Z Is a Welcome Blessing.

Hmmm...the local BX has each set for $27 a piece. Maybe I should buy 'em...or just wait for the possible DBox? Who knows...

...as for the title of the review, I don't know what to make of it. If it's a 'DBZ sucks, DB is sooo better' thing...well, I don't like to takes sides, but whatever, yo.

I'm also feeling quite torn about whether to pony up for these or hold out for Dragon Box footage. 'Course, I'm also quite broke at the mo, so at least I don't have to decide right away. (-:

I need to but it. Its been soooo long I seen "Dragonball".
Maybe its me, but the Dub really did a good job with the jokes. I can't stop laughing at some of the jokes.

I'll wait until season 3. And or a deal.

I bought the first one mostly because of the first 13 episodes but I also liked the Tournament. I probably won't buy any of the others, I'll wait to see what FUNi does first. If they do release a "Box" down the road I can find myself supporting that much easier than a Z Box because Dragonball kept the original music when dubbing so the transition from one to the other would be simple.

As for the series itself, I don't know for some reason every time I watch Dragonball I find myself liking it over Z a little more each time. Z has good fights but Dragonball has good story and fights.

I'm with you. I think what I might do is wait until the blue bricks hit the Piccolo saga to start buying. I think that and Piccolo Jr. are my favorite bits of the manga, so I won't mind double-dipping on just those if/when Funi releases a Dragon Box version.

Lol, Saba's Yamcha voice is his most natural one. I completely agree.

Honestly, I never even really got the Z feeling even with Piccolo (Jr. right?). I mean, I can clearly see how you could because there was a lot of fast and furious fighting much more so than anything we had seen in the series (Kuririn vs. Piccolo is perhaps one of my favorite fights) but I just saw that as Toriyama really declaring endgame on the comic and just going all out for that last battle. Then again, it was that endgame style that brought Z into the world so yeah....

It's so nice to see the recent Dragon Ball DvD releases have won the hearts of everyone around here. This is why I love The Dragon Ball franchise. It appeals to everyone, not just a certain audience.

We don't really know when, or even if FUnimation will release "Dragon Box" versions of the original show, plus the first 13 episodes are now available in their original versions after having been tangled up in legal lirabo for some time (specifically the home video rights; FUNi has always had the TV rights), so I think we really need to take what we can get here.

Anyway:

Even if it meant we would end up getting a Shin Chan-style dub? Long story short, and with all due respect to the writer, the way FUNi handled Crayon Shin-chan (and for that matter, the way they almost handled Sgt. Frog) has made it clear that we need to be careful what we wish for, regardless of whether it's the original 1981 series or the 1997 remake (in any case, if FUNi was to ever license one of the two versions I would prefer the former). A subtitled-only release would make things easier, but I don't think Funimation will ever do something like that...

Anyway, since Akira Toriyama never originally intended to go past the Pilaf arc, I only got Season One for the first 13 episodes. I plan to get Season 2, but only for the Dr. Slump crossover, since at the moment, that may be the closest Region 1 ever gets to having Dr. Slump (which came before Dragon Ball) on DVD in any form. That said, if (and I stress IF) FUNi were to release the Dragon Box versions, I might get those for the sake of comparison...

Yeah, that was my plan (and with Season Three hitting stores 2/2 we'll probably see Season Four in May).

It is the tail-end of the 22nd Tenka'ichi Bud

RE: Dragon Ball Seasons vs Dragon Ball Dragon Box

I am going to shell out money for both. It's a waste, and I know it, but I like to support my favorite anime, I don't know if there's going to be a Dragon Box, and I'll give these to my little brothers if there is a Dragon Box.

It's a pretty easy decision for me.

Don't hold your breath for the Dragon Box footage. If Funimation ever releases that, it wouldn't be for a loooong time...

I see less need for a Dragon Box-style release for this series than DBZ, because these sets are not cropped to widescreen and riddled with DVNR problems.

And early indications do point to the first R1 DragonBox Z being a smashing success sales-wise. 'Course, if Funi didn't snag the rights to the Dragon Ball Box footage along with the Z footage and have to go back hat-in-hand to Toei, it could still take a while.
