Toon Zone Talkback - Di-Gata Defenders premieres of 4Kids TV July 28

While it's good to see Di-Gata come to the states, I would have rather Nelvana handled the property themselves (or at least through their Kidsco alliance with DiC) rather than trust it in the hands of 4Kids.

And I pray that they don't give 4Kids Class of the Titans because that will not sit well with me. That show is too good to for them.

Then again, COTT isn't one of those card/dice/duel shows 4Kids is so fond of, unlike Di-Gata. I'm just shocked as sugar to see them pick up a foreign series that didn't come from Japan.

I hope Nelvana handles DVD distributions on their own.

Off course we all know 4Kids excel at selling merchandise and with Di-Gata toys ready to hit the street this alliance could be beneficial to Nelvana.

All I'm hoping for is a respectful handling of the serie. Just promote the time slot, don't shuffle it around needlessly or repeat episodes after only 3 new ones and the show will work its magic all on its own. No need to interfere too much ya know. The show's got MAD potential.

The fact that they start from the REAL first episode and not cut to some more action-y later ep like KidsWB could have done (remember Monster Allergy?) is already a good sign.

And it's not that surprising they get something from somewhere else than Japan. I mean Win'X Club is italian after all :p

No kidding. The show's been around for a couple of years now, and I'm still shocked that 4Kids found it before anybody else did. I just hope they keep everything as is, meaning they don't "4Kidsify" anything, including the voices, the music (particularly the theme song), and the stories themselves.

Yeah. That's true. The Cramp Twins were from the UK and Cubix was from South Korea. But most of 4Kids' imports come from the land of the rising sun, and it's surprising to see them acquire an English-language action series.

Hmm...sounds like it's a pretty good series. Guess I'll have to check it out. Gaming shows are right up my alley.

Though I do find it a bit odd that 4Kids didn't promote it at all until this last Saturday.

No kidding. It seemed to just pop up out of nowhere.

I love a series that advances the story from episode to episode, so I definitely look forward to checking it out.

The show's been available on Vortex! On Demand for about 6 weeks now. I've watched the first two episodes.

I haven't thought to check whether this acquisition by 4Kids will cause Vortex to remove the show. (Then again, 4Kids has a VOD section on my cable as well.)

Unlikely, IMO.

In any event, I have the last laugh:

1. It's alreayd available on demand (as has been pointed out).

2. It's a third party series that will be airing under contract (as was the case with Bratz).

I of course, will not be watching this on this block. However that's okay, because I can still watch it on demand.

Take that, Kahn...

Soon, I hope. Fox oughta make a deal with Disney. That way we could see Jetix on FOX, and Power Rangers could come back full circle.

Actually it's only been around since last year.

I can't see them doing major changes to the show... I mean it's still airing in North America and I can't fathom the border making THAT big of a difference in standard.

Off course it's been airing at around 8 PM on Teletoon (showing it's a popular 'prime time' show) and there's the occasionnal 'kill' and 'death'... but I can't see Nelvana allowing messing up with the show, they want it to succeeds too much.

It's not quite a gaming show per se however. The battles aren't structured with rules and stuff like say Yu-gi-oh! or Beyblade, the dices are weapons and are used in a free for all format. Only on special occasions do they have duels that are arranged.

Maybe they didn't announced it because it only went through just recently?

Why would they change the voices, the show is already in NA English. What do Canadian accents confuse kids now? Half the cartoons around are voiced by Canadians. Is there any content 4kids would have to edit out? Canada and America have similar cultural standards.

There really isn't much of a difference between Canadian and American accents anyway. It's mostly in dialect, spelling, and a couple of different words . . . and it's usually not seen in VAing.

Trust me, I've been in Canada. They really aren't all that different from the States.

We're more different than you think.

But yeah the accents aren't gonna bother 'em.

I've been trying to find places in forums that talk about Di-gata, but all I found was the official one... odd.

Someone noted it was getting popular in other English speaking market? That's pretty cool!

And the theme song is just instrumental. I don't see them changing it.

What I DO see them doing is croping it up to make it fullscreen -.- gah. IT'S A WIDESCREEN SHOW! LEAVE IT WIDESCREEN!

The C8 will probably be turned into a Y7-FV in the US.

I was being sarcastic, most American kids can't tell the difference between Canadian and American voices, considering a lot of cartoons are voiced by Canadians. I was just pointing out, that it is unlikely that 4kids will change the voices, which some on this thread have feared, because the show is already in NA English. Unlike anime which is in Japanese, it would just be a waste of money to dub over this show, it would be cheaper for them not to dub it.

I'll tell you why. Because they have no respect for (among other things) entertainment value, or the very industry they represent (Ryan Drummond was willing to relocate to New York, but they blew him off anyway). They also assume that the viewers want everything to be American, and as such assume that Americans "don't want anything to do with Canada, eh?"

Still, since this is a third party series airing under contract, Nelvana probably won't let them change the voices, especially since Nelvana has had a U.S. presence for years despite operating out of Canada. Nelvana likely won't stand for anyone "breaking their backs".

They might do it anyway, but again, Nelvana is completely unlikely to let them.

I saw the first episode online. It has that same card-battle like feel as Chaotic and YGO what with the summonings and spells and monsters to help out, and animation that they'll reuse time and time again. Which I have to admit, is getting pretty tiresome, so I kind of found this show a little boring.

I will probably watch another episode to solidify my decision.

As I said it's EXTREMELY rare for the battle to be like the fight between Mel and Seth in the first episode. Structure duels are a rarity. More often than not it's similar to the second fight in the episode, on the fly, where the dice are used like spells or weapons.

It's closer to say...Slayers, than it is to YGO. They don't have time to explain their moves and ponder the rules...there is no rules basically.

So yeah you should give it a few more eps.

There's already a Saturday morning Disney block. It's called ABC Kids, and it's horrible.

...I just watched the premiere on TV. It wasn't really all that good...
