Toon Zone Talkback - Central Park Media Shuts Down

The final nail for this legendary anime company. It has closed its doors, filing for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. What fond memories and what a release history.

I wouldn't call CPM "legendary" but it did have some good titles that are now left in the loop now.

This is sad, sad news, not at Geneon's level, but it is still sad.

Another anime company that bites the dust..

This stinks, it seems like the only companies with any kick left is Adv, Funi, Bandai, Media Blasters, Nozomi, and Viz..

and adv doesnt sound like their doing too good either..

Nozomi? Who are they? Never heard of 'em.

Anyway, Media Blasters May be next, but I`m 100% certain bandai will not fold, as they have many other things besides anime, and Funimation and Viz have Several Evergreen properties under their belt.

ADV is a bit shaky. They have a few good properties, but aside from this Nozomi that I'm just now hearing about, they're the next most likely to go after rab.

Nozomi is RightStuf, they just decided to give their anime division a different name after their anniversary, and I guess a few companies have to be Superman and rescue CPM's titles

Nozomi is RightStuf's licensing division. Some Nozomi titles include Maria Watches Over Us, Aria, The Third, and Emma: A Victorian Romance, among a few others.

As for the news, I can't say it surprised me. CPM hasn't released a new title since 2006, and that says it all right there. This announcement only finalized the writing that's been on the wall for some time now. And with the economy, I'm amazed this didn't happen sooner.

Looking at my DVD collection, I only have five titles from them. (plus one I no longer own) So I was never a huge buyer of their library. Still, it's never good to have fewer companies.

I never heard of nozomi too. but adv is not doing too well. Media blasters have many delays. funimation and viz are set with well doing titles and I think bandai is doing okay. But I always hate hearing when a company fails.

Yes that would be horrible! but the way I see it Funi is on top right now, they have a lot of big titles under there belts not to mention the genon saves, FUNI is deffinantly OK! same for VIZ & Bandai, Its Media blasters We need to be worried about! man I better get Season 1 of Kenshin before its to late!

Above = Truth.

That would be an absolute nightmare. They're just now getting used to the new online viewing model, which is already a success on Joost and Hulu.

For them to go down would throw everything into chaos, with Viz left to falter.

ADV has evangelion, it's major seller. Media Blasters I`d say would go before ADV.

Whether you like CPM or not, they did help get anime its foot in the door to the U.S and Canada. While the majority of their catalog were crappy OVAs, they did have some good gems that were worth owning like Slayers and Patlabor.

I still have my copy of Garzey's Wing and Legend of Lemnear and still enjoy watching them.

Nevertheless, I'm not surprised by this move. There were a lot of signs that the company was hurting and now they've reached their end. I only hope those who enjoyed working at CPM will find better careers elsewhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone bought the FUNimation division from Navarre if they were to file for bankruptcy. Its pretty bad, though, that FUNimation has a near-monopoly on the anime industry at this point. I hope once the economy gets better, the anime industry branches out again. A monopoly is pretty bad for any industry.

Maybe when FUNi rescues Lodoss and Patlabor, I'll check them out.

Umm, Funimation isn't anywhere close to going bankrupt. In fact, these last couple of months have seen an upturn in their business. I don't know where all this talk is coming from.

But yeah, CPM. I knew you well. Dominion Tank Police was the first anime DVD I ever owned. Thanks for the memories.

Let's not lose our heaRAB about the prospects of the industry here. CPM has been all but dead for a long time now, it's just now the case in name as well as reality.

As for Navarre, yes, they got hit by the economy like a lot of other people. But we don't know their financial results beyond Q3 2008, and they've already made adjustments for the long term by restructuring and discontinuing the BCI label and other things that were hemmoraging money (source). And unlike BCI FUNimation is in the black and growing even in miRABt of the current economic climate, so this idea of Funi being in imminent danger is something I'm very skeptical about.

CPM did have some good titles, such as Lodoss War, Patlabor, Votoms, and Now and Then, Here and There...hopefully a few get saved, although to be honest a majority of the catalog is better left alone. They licensed quite a few obscure things, and while it's harsh to say it's not exactly an accident that they ended up going under.

ADV is probably in far dire straits financially than Media Blasters at the moment. Their side projects (Anime Network, Newtype, etc.) have all by and large blown up in the company's face. I wouldn't be surprised if they were to go kaput next, or merge with Funi.

The fear is that the parent company will go under, which screws FUNi over and possibly folRAB the company regardless of how well FUNi's doing.
