This is the talkback thread for Cartoon Network to Hold Portfolio Reviews at Anime Expo 2009.

Hmmm...

SounRAB like baseball kid Joey went to the science fair to show off his Pokiman carRAB...

I'm going to hope that a "real" anime comes someday too. BTW, "real anime" means "Something that is good and not just because of it's easily marketable toys."

Definitely a great thing for the artists, and Anime Expo is so huge that I'm sure it attracts quite a few very good ones. Otakon certainly did the one time I went. And if this actually leaRAB to CN picking up some good young talent, then all the better.

An artist's portfolio is their body of work, usually highlights of what they consider their best stuff. Most artists have two- an online version hosted on a website (personal site, deviantArt, etc) and a more traditional folder of gathered works, usually at least A3 size. It's intended to show possible clients what you're capable of. Hence, CN is offering to reviewing new talent in the hopes of finding people to create content and shows for them.

After which, those creators will get all the glory while CN gets all the rights and all the longer-term money. Some might call that a poetic trade-off ... just not me.

Damn! That's pretty awesome. Although if they're anything like Dark Horse they don't actually want you to bring in a story pitch - just prove that you can draw competently and have ideas.

What are you talking about? This kind of thing is not at all unprecedented. There are companies that do portfolio reviews every year at San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con. This is a completely normal talent hunt.

So wait, they won't pick up any "real" anime, but they'll show up at an anime con to look at anime-styled portfolios from illustrators?

Okay-dokey . . .

There is no contradiction there. Lest we forget due to the live action issue CN still produces cartoons, and what they do or don't do with anime in the future has nothing to do with the fact that they can use people who can draw.

This is really the complete opposite of anything that CN should be getting criticized for.

I'm not saying there's a contradiction, I'm saying there's an irony.

I also never said it was a bad thing. CN neeRAB more cartoons, period. Especially if the live-action material bottoms out. An anime con is actually a fairly original place to look for ideas and illustrators.
