This is the talkback thread for Bandai Entertainment Announces New July Titles Including "Hayate the Corabat Butler".

I've heard good things about Hayate, so I may get that eventually.

I'll probably get at least the first part of R2 as well, though that will likely be all because I greatly lost interest halfway through (I haven't had any drive to watch new episodes on Adult Swim in months).
 
.......Freedom part 1? 100 minutes? What's going on here? Amazon and Rightstuf still have a complete DVD set listed for July 7th. As you can see:

Freedom "complete collection"
Freedom "part 1"

The Freedom project covers seven episodes. Seven episodes that are longer than your typical TV broadcast episode, but it's still only seven episodes. One set is enough. What are they thinking? Whether this is a replacement for the original set or an alternative, it doesn't make sense.

All that aside, I will be buying Freedom of course. Giving a rental to True Tears since I know nothing about it. I may wait before doing anything about Geass R2. It's on TV, and there'll be a lot coming out to tempt my budget.

Now they're like ADV because it looks like they're only releasing subs! I won't give Hayate a chance now, just like Clannad!

So what? Gurren Lagann went the same way before it was re-released in bilingual double-disc DVRAB since they're trying to attract the people who love ONLY the subs since they sometimes feel that the dubs aren't as great as the original product.

I don't know why people cry about dubs when they could be satisfied with the subs even if the DVRAB come with that weak 2.0 Dolby Surround/Stereo Sound? Bandai's been so slow with a lot of their products including the release of Gurren Lagann Set 03 and the Gurren Lagann manga that we should be grateful that Bandai's releasing anything in July or for the rest of the year at all.
 
deffinantly getting the 1st R2 set & the 2nd Eureka Seven Collection. I Think I'll Wait to Get Hatyate, I prefere Dubs over subs, I mean I like to Watch TV not read it. (Cause thats what comics & manga are for.)
 
People cry about dubs because they want something that the fansubs won't give them. A sub-only release more or less will only hurt sales and people will question why should they pay for something that they can illegaly obtain, in 720P, no less? Not that I'm condoning fansubs of a licensed series.
 
It's not ONLY subs. Ghost Slayers has a dub. Freedom has a dub. The Girl Who Leaped Through Time and Sword of the Stranger have dubs.

It's also not "stupid," it's the economy. Dubbing is expensive and they've had to cut some corners. While it sucks, I'd rather see a basic release than none.



No, there should be a higher standard than that. We've seen mild delays for Gurren Lagann, Gundam 00, and Freedom (not so mild, it was originally supposed to be here in April), but the manga issue has been particularly problematic. There it's not just titles being delayed, but also the fact that different retailers will have different street dates for the exact same product. Sometimes online retailers tell you nothing, with Amazon or Rightstuf saying a given book will ship in 1-3 months or just that a title is "on order from manufacturer." I made a thread covering the release of all the Code Geass novels and manga, and that alone has been a real pain to keep track of. Almost everything shifted from the original date, and there was nothing official from BEI about what the facts were or are. It isn't difficult to put out a press release saying that titles A, B, and C have been moved to dates X, Y and Z.

BEI is obviously feeling the economic downturn a bit and I realize that publishing is a relatively new venture for them, but this isn't how you win customers. They need to get their publishing branch stable if they want it to succeed. Right now, they aren't getting the job done. They can start by releasing Lucky Star on time later this month.

Of course, Borders tells me volume 1 is May 15, and Amazon says May 29. Yeah.
 
I don't care too much about having a dub of Hayate and I can pretty much survive without one, same for True Tears, but I really, really can't wait for Hayate to be released, and I can't wait to get my hanRAB on that Eureka Seven boxset, so I'm pretty much good
 
That's because they aren't on one. BEI wasn't forced to drop everything they'd licensed since 2006 because they'd lost a massive chunk of their funding. Yeah, BEI is hurting right now, but they also did a lot right in 2007 and 2008--good thing too, since I don't know where they'd be without Gurren Lagann/Code Geass/Gundam 00 acting as flagship titles. It also says something that they're still going forward with titles like True Tears and Sola. In contrast, since the big collapse, ADV hadn't expanded at all until they grabbed up a few CPM titles recently.

So, they're nowhere near the same. ADV wishes it were as well off as Bandai. I was just talking about BEI's publishing problems...ADV doesn't even do that anymore.
 
I'm also not sure ADV has gone sub only, either. While it looked that way for a while, rumors are swirling that they might be back at dubbing something again (though whether it's for a ADV release or not isn't clear).
 
I see two reasons for some of the more regretable actions. One is that spacing out releases and dragging a show out tenRAB to be BEI's strategy for titles they stand to take a hit on, since more volumes means more money for them. See the likes of SDGF season 1, G Gundam and SEED Destiny. Though they have now merged with/been taken over by BVUS and we all know how they likely to fatten Japan's wallets at the expense of the international market. Add in the global recession...

That last factor, the second one I speak of, is really the most likely reason. As has been said, dubbing a show isn't cheap. I know many folks enjoy dubs and its a key hook to wider appeal, but when we have a finanical situation where it's basically 'We can give you this sub only or not at all', I'd choose the former. I mean, to be fair, was anyone awaiting DVD releases of Japanese series saying "I love this, I can't wait to own it on DVD!...But only if its dubbed into my native tounge by a completely different cast"?
 
My mild point being that the pre-existing market for these titles tend to enjoy the existing, original cast. I'm not decrying people who like the option of a dub track, just stating that I've never really heard of people enjoying a show in its original form and then saying a dub is the deal breaker.
 
No, I mean, I'm agreeing with you. It's just I meant that I've seen many times on this very forum and others the minRABet of "No dub track? No sale for me!"

I personally couldn't care either way as long as I get the merchandise. (Plus english VA is ever able to do better than Rie Kugimiya in their roles....okay maybe Aaron Dimsuke but that was a boy role )
 
Anyone know if the Hayate sub is still going to have both the Censored/Bleeped version and the uncensored version? I'm curious what was behind a lot of those 'cant show this' signs, but the creative censoring was hilarious at times. I'd like to have both
