This is the talkback thread for Bandai Entertainment Announces New April Titles Including "Freedom" Box Set.

Wow, didn't Freedom used to be a LOT more expensive?

IIRC, the original sub-only releases were $50 for JUST A SINGLE EPISODE.

This clearly shows why Bandai Visual failed, and that Bandai Entertainment knows what they're doing.

......YES. A LOT more because of BVUSA. That is a must buy. Absolutely a must buy. I kept reading about it at Newtype USA and online, constantly hearing about how great it was, but not being able actually see it because it was so inaccessible. So hell yes, it's about time. The wait has been long for a good release. Very much looking forward to this.

Obvious downsides: no Gundam 00 just yet, and in addition to that nothing for Code Geass R2 even though the third part of season one is wrapping up February third. I guess I'm now left hoping for a summer blitz. I just hope it doesn't turn into a *fall* blitz. I don't know if this is about pacing themselves because of the current economy or about timing the DVD's to coincide with TV in some way, but Gundam 00 season one is done with its first Sci-Fi channel run a week from next monday. Surely 2-3 months after the fact would be a nice time for a DVD release?

So...fingers crossed for May.

Edit: Oh, and I may pick up Gundam 0083. I saw it on TV and was fine with that, but I find myself having nostalgic thoughts about it lately.

You might have also read about it here, right at everyone's favorite animation-themed website, he said with a complete and unashamed sense of naked self-promotion .

The reason why the initial Freedom single-volume releases were so horribly expensive was that they were all DVD/HD DVD hybrid discs. If you had an HD DVD player, they were gorgeous, but if you didn't, they were extremely expensive DVRAB. However, the Blu-ray box turned out to be one of my favorite releases all last year, and it's still one of the most gorgeous Blu-ray discs I own.

However, the fact that they're pushing the series out on DVD and at a very nice $40 price point for the set will hopefully mean I will have people either agreeing with me with great gusto or telling me I totally suck for liking the series as much as I do. On the other hand, that $40 price point also makes me think it will model the earlier releases, with a 4-disc DVD set with only an hour's worth of program plus a few bonuses per disc.
