Toon Zone Talkback - Bandai Announces New February Titles Including "Kurokami"

They're cleary discouraging the Western market from buying the Blu-Ray version of Kurokami, and I won't (and since I mainly buy Blu-Rays when they're available over the DVD, I won't be buying that either).

Congratulations!!! No sale!!!

Wow, now I haven't bought anything from Bandai since the double disc Zeta DVRAB, but this is getting pretty pathetic. I don't know the specifics of Bandai and how they work, but if they ever give up on doing their own NA releases, FUNimation could make quite the ultimate steal...and at this point, that's what I'm hoping for.

But back in the real world, Bandai continues to make me not want to buy any of their stuff. Whee.

Well, Kurokami's DVD version has my attention. I enjoyed the series on YT and I guess I should pay Bandai back if I can get the money.

I missed the E7 movie in theaters but I have no intention of missing the movie release.

Surely there should be some way to calculate how long they should wait before licensing something for the NA market if they're afraid of reverse importation. "Gimping" the product in this anime market on a relatively new medium in these economic conditions is a recipe for failure. At the very least, it's no recipe for success.

A tad bit of necromancy but I'll personally be buying the the Blu-Ray for both Eureka Seven Movie and Kurokami. If there is one company I trust with Blu-Ray, its them. Amazon has Kurokami BD for $13.99 and Eureka 7 Movie for $22.99. I'm willing to put my morals (I have refused to buy dub-only since Mobile Suit Gundam) behind me and support those prices and releases. Besides, how can I resist Laura Bailey?

Funimation's BD releases, for the most part, have been inferior spec-wise and most are upconverted in-house. I only feel assured to buy a Funimation BD if Japan has already gotten it and its genuine HD. They also seem to have other problems (widespread too) that others have pointed out elsewhere.

The overriding problem is that the Japanese bosses have no respect for the foreign market yet want its cash. It's kind of creepy, but a big part of selling things like this is to create an appeal with the audience, a connection. Bandai/Sunrise are unwilling to give that, instead throwing whatever series they feel like overseas and doing so in a way that comes across like a cheap cash grab. They get their money from the initial licensing fees (which companies like BEI are forced to pay), show no interest and then complain that the title wasn't a success in that region. Nothing will change unless they stop looking at the foreign market as petty cash or a threat to their domestic sales. There are already signs in the industry that reaching out to the global market, partially with the help of distributors born and bred in said regions, can make titles work. But Bandai will have none of this, instead killing their own chances simply to hold a tight control over their properties. We saw how they disliked it when American fans slaughtered them at that BVUS con panel a few years back and it's made all the more worse when we know the local distributors WANT to do things right.
