Toon Zone Talkback - Anime at Best Buy in 2009: A New Strategy

This is the talkback thread for Anime at Best Buy in 2009: A New Strategy.

Hmm, I have to wonder under which category my Best Buys in the area fall. They've been cutting back lately; I hope they aren't one of the stores to reduce the selection to about 20 titles.

I know I brought it up before but I'm betting that we won't get the official list of what's going on sale until next week in time for the March 1st sale?

I guess I have to keep an eye out at my local best buy. That way if it's one that is getting rid of all their anime I can get some good deals. And if they don't get rid of all their anime I still win.

Yeah I know twenty titles will suck but hey I don't have money for anime anyway so taking advantage of 50% off anime is something I can't miss.

Yes, my Best Buy (the one in Poughkeepsie) is not one of the 461 stores cutting down to A-list anime titles only! I guess anime still sells decently by where I live.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Both Altoona and State College are on that list! They're the only ones around here! And ever since Suncoast closed, FYE is the only place to get anime AND NEVER HAVE THEY ANYTHING GOOD!!!

Sigh. And they wonder why nobody buys anything local anymore...

An SKU is an individual item. Ex. Both the normal and special editions of Gurren lagann Part 1 are their own unique SKUs.

Hopefully this means no more Superspecial editions clogging up shelves with their unnecessarily oversized boxes.

Is there any way to know which type of store your local BB is?

I`m pretty sure that the one at Palisades center should be a top 200, but the other one closer to me, I have no idea.

Huh, my Best Buy isn't on the list. Neat...too bad they don't carry any titles I'm currently buying.

I'll definitely have to go to the DeKalb one and grab some Lucky Star DVRAB if they're on sale.

Ohh boy, that is not good news for the industry. Best Buy is basically the only retailer left that even sells a lot of anime apart from the FYE's of the world. Having them essentially dumping anime is goign to be murder on the industry. Almost half of their stores will only have 20 anime titles ever? Geeeez.

Well crud, my local Best Buy is on the list. And I was just noticing the other day how their collection didn't seem very scaled back. I don't buy a lot of anime at Best Buy, but I like having the option there. Guess I'll be sticking with my online options. I will check out the sale, though.

In the grand scheme of things, it seems that selling anime is not a priority with Best Buy, especially since the store relies on the variety of tech gear they can supply. The stores I go to only sell the most popular or the newest box sets anyway, but it still stinks that the best possible option is to rely on online retailers.

One way to look at it: 20 SKU's ~= Naruto Uncut Sets + DragonballZ widecreen sets. Perhaps add in Afro Samurai, some Ghibli Movies and perhaps the BLeach and Death Note boxsets, and thats it. You can fit that on 1 shelf.

Hah. It's times like this I'm glad I live on Long Island, where there's a Best Buy within 10 minutes of me North, South, East, and West. Though the Huntington one will be affected, apparently the Levittown Best Buy, my closest one, won't be affected.

Still, more soraber news for anime fans in the west. I'm not exactly relieved: at this point, it's just another sign that anime is...not doing that great.

I think I know which one you are referring to Spike from personal experience as well. We also appear to be in the clear in that Lubbock isn't on that list, but since we have a Best Buy going up in Odessa, we'll probably only get the top 20 titles at that one, which will suck. I guess this means I will have to get Hunter x Hunter online as well as Case Closed season 5. At least my Case Closed season 4 has shipped now...

In other worRAB, basically what wal mart carries. ugh.. that's bad..

EDIT:

Maybe this can be seen aas a blessing in disguise. Single-Disk releases in that kind of environment would be suicude, which means we might just see an end to them, forced by of all things, the market.

How nice for you. The Baldwin one is going down. It's a shame, really, since that one actually had a really good collection, and several limited editions. Guess it's back to online for me.
