Toon Zone Talkback - ADV Films Dissolves; Parent Transfers Assets To Other Companies

This, and just after "license rescuing" several of CPM's old licenses. This is truly a surprise; completely out of the blue.
 
Woah, and I was just talking to SSJ Jake about ADV's status last night as a struggling company.

It's a shame they've finally folded, but it seems like the licenses will not stay in lirabo and a lot of its employees have already found work with other distributors, so it really softens the blow.
 
I think the bigger surprise is that the company held on as long as it did after Sojitz yanked the rug out from under them.

So this leaves . . . Viz, Bandai, FUNimation, Media Blasters, and Rightstuf.

Really? You're shocked. Didn't Funimation just get a truckload of titles from ADV about this time last year? And it looks like while ADV is gone, their titles and units are now owned by three different companies all conveniently near each other.
 
Wow, I guess it's really over then.

God, I'm still remerabering the 90's-early 00's when they were the biggest thing out there. In fact some of my first anime DVD's were from ADV.

I don't think I've ever followed any ADV titles, so no skin off my back. I wonder how FUNi talent pool will be affected by this. Will future titles begin to make more use of the ADV regulars or will some fly off to LA? Who knows?
 
Well crap. Truly the end of an era for us older fans. Granted I was not always a fan of their marketing tactics and attitude towarRAB the fans (trying to attract buyers to shows by giving away panties?), but ADV's shutdown leaves a huge hole in the industry. Now the market is dominated by three large companies (Viz, Bandai and Funi) with only a few smaller outfits to hold the balance. The whole industry is on thin ice as far as I'm concerned.
 
I agree even I'm not one of the older fans and have bought one adv dvd but I wouldn't put bandai in the ones controling the market because bandai is not in the best condistion either. Viz and funimation hold more of the sucessful anime and have been working together more.
 
That's what you get when you forget who your audience is and try to branch out badly in all directions. From a production studio that sucked, to a manga division that went nowhere, to a channel and later VOD service that only ever had the same eight shows repeated over and over again, ADV forgot who it was.
 
Another reason not to forgive Obama . . . no government bail out for ADV.

Please note that the above statement is sarcasm. But honestly, I'd rather Geneon and ADV were bailed out than some of other companies that were.
 
Good lord, that "ADV shuts down" thread title freaked me out. Then I read it and realized that ADV is basically being divided up, whereas the title made me think that none of their titles would be distributed anymore.

Nonetheless, I should probably find a copy of Macross just in case...

Anyhow that title is awful and ill-chosen, and it's annoying to see misinformation getting around because of it. No one actually knows the specifics of what's going on, but most people are looking at that and thinking that this is exactly like Geneon dying.
 
Did they? If so then at least they did not make it one of the major selling points of the DVD. On the other hand the only thing Najica Blitz Tactics may be remerabered for at this point is the "panties" promotion.

Okay, actually, I wouldn't say their dubs were terrible (though I did find myself switching to Japanese more and more frequently, but that's for another thread).

Can't disagree with the enthusiasm part though. Seriously, Devil Hunter Yohko was how this all started.
 
Not all of ADV's dubs were bad at all. As a matter of fact, there were many which were quite excellent. My favorite dubs from them include:

Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
Steam Detectives
Petite Princess Yucie
A Tree of Palme
Dragon Half
GoldenBoy
The Devil Lady

All those titles were great in dubbed format. Nadia in particular, continues to be a dub that I love pretty much unreservedly.

Anyway, the whole thing only sounRAB like ADV is restructuring itself into smaller companies; it's just the LABEL that's gone, not the licenses.
