This is the talkback thread for 2009 Annie Award Nominees Announced.

So they expand the Best Animated Feature category to six nominees and Ponyo still got snubbed, despite nominations for Miyazaki and Hisaishi.

No Ed Asner for voice acting? Astro Boy's wreck of a script getting nominated over a film like Coraline? THIS IS SPARTA!!!

Interesting Secret of Kells gets one single nomination for Feature. I'm curious about seeing that one.

Nice to see J.G. Quintel get props for his work on Flapjack and really great to see Spectacular Spider-Man's Final Curtain nominated for Storyboard.

Ed Asner lost out to that lot for nominations? I am shocked.

Bummer for Ponyo.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs wasn't terrible? I didn't really look into it.

It's almost like they're trying to prevent Dreamworks from being able to buy all of the film Annies this year. Monsters vs. Aliens only gets three noms in lesser important categories.

This year's Annies will be interesting, since the competition of the film categories is less one-sided than last year's. Except the wins to be contentious.

Ponyo should at least win for Best Directed Feature and Best Music Score.
ESPECIALLY best Music Score, it's the best music Joe Hisaishi ever composed.
If not Ponyo, the music score from Up should.

IMHO, it was a nice surprise. I thought it was going to be like every other non-Pixar CG flick (cynical mean sense of humor and pop culture refs), but it really surprised me with how sincere and funny it was.

The DVD is out on the 4th next month, and I highly reccomend it as a rental.

That said, I'm saddened Ponyo didn't make it. But it's not something I'm going to lose sleep over either.

Oh come on, The Simpsons gets nominated for a whole schitzeload of awards, while neither South Park nor Family Guy get nominated for a single one? I guess the people who decides these nominations have the mindset that "The Simpsons is the smartest and funniest adult cartoon on TV" so set in stone that they simply cant see that that simply isn't the case anymore (it was true once of course, but that was a looong time ago...). Really, does anybody laugh more at the average new Simpsons epsiode than the average new Family Guy episode? And can anyone really argue that new Simpsons episodes have as clever and inventive storylines as new South Park episodes?

I laugh more at the new Simpsons episodes more than Family Guy usually, but there is no argument that South Park has the best writing and stories out of all the adult animated comedies right now.

The Mighty B! got 3 nominations! AWSHOME!!!

As for Best Animated Film, I can see Up winning (a great movie!), but I'm also rooting for Coraline. Either way, it's a win-win situation!

I disagree. I thought Astro Boy's writing nom was well deserved. I liked that movie a heck of a lot more than Coraline (although Coraline was still pretty good). Astro should have been nommed for best music score too. I have the CD and it's excellent.

Freddie Highmore should have been nominated for his voice work too. He turned Astro into a really sympathetic, likable character. Overall this movie isn't getting the kudos it deserved. But at least the Annies recognized it somewhat. The frelling Golden Globes snubbed it while nominated junk like Battle For Terra (barf).

Annie committee continues to drop the ball in the voice acting categories. Teri Hatcher and Dakota Fanning deserved voice acting nods for Coraline (possibly Keith David) as well. And don't get me started on the TV nominees (No Corey Burton for Secret Saturdays? Reeeeeeeeeally?)
