I am prescribed a drug called fioricet because I headaches every day. Lately I have found myself in somewhat of a spiraling depression. Fioricet is an easy drug to get high off of. For those that do not know, it contains acetaminophen, caffeine, and butalibital (325mg, 40mg, 50mg, respectively). To make a long a story short I went a little...or highly overboard yesterday. I took 21 pills over an 8 hour period. The first 12 were taken in about 2 hours and the last of them were taken 6 hours later. I know that is nearly double the recommended daily dosage of acetaminophen. Yes, I know they say liver damage and what not. This was not an attempt at suicide, for the record. I don't know what to do. I feel alright, my stomach is a little gurgly but that's normal for me since it's morning. But this is the second time in 6 months I have done this. I am worried about what this will do to my liver. I take the meRAB daily but not in such a high amount. Actually I've had to take acetaminophen products (mostly OTC) for close to 10 years. How will I know if I have some crazy liver damage or not? How long does it take? Is it really worse than someone who drinks alcohol all of the time? I have a great girlfriend and a great family and I don't want them to know any of this. What should I expect in the next few days because of the pills?

Magus353: Get your liver checked through a blood test. They can check for toxicity and enzymes. You might want to try to detoxify your body somehow.

I'm not sure what to do to detoxify really. Perhaps lots of fluiRAB? Since I take the drug normally (minus yesterdays events) I might have to ween off it a little to avoid withdrawls.

To Clover86: I do have some issues with myself that need to be taken care of. It's a poor self image, a want to destroy myself, a lack of enjoyment out of life, inability to control (or feeling of) my own life, low self confidence, overall depression would be the shortest description I suppose.. I guess the list goes on and on. I guess what triggered it was that particular day's events. Feeling badly about myself I just went overboard wanting to feel good but then regretting it later because of the consequences. I normally use the medication to just get rid of my headaches but when a certain nuraber is taken it acts as a narcotic and most of us know that "feel good" feeling. I guess as far as my mentality goes I'll leave the rest out but that sort of sums it up.
Edit: To be clear, I am generally responsible when I take medication I am given for pain. Moments of high depression compromise that, which I am aware I do need to take care of.

To 92261: Fioricet is a drug that helps mainly with tension headaches. It is said the butalbital is a mild sedative which helps with any sort of muscle tension and the corabination of acetaminophen and caffiene helps speed the ease of the headaches up, similar to excedrin. I have seen 2 neurologists and both wanted me to take either anti-seizure medication or anti-depressants. From my above description yeah, I probably need the anti-depressants. But thank you for the advice for the detox kits.

What was the reason you took so much.. what triggered this had to be something.. you need to fix that and inderstand that before you can fix yourself. I understand you have a good life.. but there is something that is troubling you.. so what happened?

You are certainly fortunate that you did not overdose and die. Sometimes a binge is worse than a habit. I will be surprised if you do not have some sort of kidney damage. If you just took this doseage yesterday, you are not out of the wooRAB yet. It takes awhile sometimes for some effects to take place. Please, please do not do this again! You really should go for liver and kidney function tests. Fiorcet is an old drug. If you are frustrated because it is not working for you then you must let your doctor know this. After being on it for so long it is possible that it just won't work for you anymore. Are you having a low moment when you start this pill-popping frenzy or do you feel sort of high and edgy? Do not take anymore pills for at least three days, if then. You should be well medicated to not have any withdrawals for about that long(or longer). Watch stressing your body further by doing an intense body detox. It might just be too much for you. Wish you would call someone--poison control anonymously to see if you need immediate care. Sincerely, searchin

magus353: there are kits that you can buy at a healthfood store that help you detoxify your body. One is called organic total body cleanse. Yes, what are you on this headache medicine for? There are many other alternatives to help with headaches. You can even take magnesium to help with them and other B vitamins. Have you ever seen a headache specialist or a neurologist? What is this fioricet? Never heard of it.

Is it just a cry for help and attention from others? Thats not the way to go about it.

I would take yourself to the emergency room for a good charcoal shake. Why chance it?
