From early in my life, I've been "brainwashed" (for the lack of a better word) that going to college AND then going to grad school without any break in between is the way to a successful career in life. I've decided (blindly) to follow this advice without question and i'm completing my Masters degree now.
I don't have much work experience aside from part-time jobs and internships. When I look for an entry-level job in my field, they only require a BS and I'm labeled "overqualified" by the employer. When I look for a job that requires my advanced degree, I do not have any experience to go along with it.
My field is literally the worst performing sector in this already subpar economy and most people in my "network" do not know any openings in it.
I'm finding myself in a position with no obvious way out even if the economy isn't so bad. I'm literally either overqualified or under experienced for the vast majority of the few jobs available. Going for a PhD is not an option either (failed the qualifying exams so i'm forced to graduate with MS.)
What advice is pertinent to my special circumstances? In other words, what should I try from now on (in addition to the usual: network, apply to more companies, get some temporary work in a local store or McDonalds, etc.)?
