Tonsillectomy Post OP 6DAY

Hi.

I'm 21 - well, I suppose closer to 22, but a year shouldn't make a major difference...

I'm at my 6th day of recovery after a tonsillectomy and I can't help but wonder if the 10 Days I took off work were enough.

Have you ever heard a deaf person talk?? That's how I sound... You can understand what I'm saying, but I have to repeat myself a couple of times now and then. I work with elderly people and patients that don't always hear well.

I'm experiencing what I think is the worst level of pain at this point (on a scale of 1 to 10 I'm at an 8). I was eating pudding and Jell-O, Cream of Wheat - things like that, out the door! I was so hungry because I was told to fast for 12 hours. Then my appetite has declined due to the nastiness of the WHOLE procedure; the taste is the WORST.

I'm just freaking out because I went into this hearing that it is just a REALLY bad sore throat, it's no big deal, but I'm finding that it is.

I had chronic tonsillitis to the point that I didn't even know I had it any more. The doctor said that I had been infected for YEARS. I have a lot of health issues coming to a head lately it seems like!

Sorry for rambling - point of this was to find out if work is okay after 10 days and when will I be able to talk somewhat normally?:(

You might want to post this on the Ear, Nose and Throat board as all the tonsil folks are over there.

But I was off work 2 weeks when I had mine out.

Are you drinking plenty of water? Even if you think you can't swallow it you have to force yourself. And when you think you have had enough, drink some more. I believe that's what made the difference in my recovery. I also switched from the pain meds to liquid tylenol and it made me feel so much better. It will help with the pain and the swelling too.

I was about your age when my tonsils were removed.

Took off 2 weeks vacation to have the procedure. Decided after a week I could go back to work only to find out I was too weak, no stamina, did not feel good, etc. and had to work only half days the second week in order to gradually build back to a full day.

It is no picnic but you will be glad to have this behind you. Having tonsils removed will not keep you from getting a sore throat, you will still get them with viruses, etc., not the constant problem you had before.

I had a problem of frequent laryngitis (sp) and talking on the telephone was a must in my job. Had no choice but to get tonsils removed. they were so infected.

I'm on day 10...and honestly, I'd say 2 weeks off would be more reliable time for you to heal...I surely wouldn't be back at work if I did work...

day 6-8 were my worst days

I'm having a similar issue where i have 3 40% assignments due in within the next two weeks and really haven't left myself with enough recovery time.

I also had chronic tonsilitis to the point they weren't really sore anymore just pitted and infection ridden so they had to go but i sure wish i wasn't going through this!

I'm at day 6 just heading over the major pain hump and was planning a party on day 11 which i promply cancelled once reality set in! the recovery is not as straightforward as i thought with many people describing bleeding up to 20 days after..
My jobs on the phone and talking is a major issue at present so i certainly won't be keen to go back day 13 post op, which was the plan.
I'm wondering whether i should apply for extensions for my assignments. What do you guys think?

Hi! I just got your reply and I think that if you're really feeling that badly, I might apply for the extension JUST IN CASE, but if you get the assignments done early, then great! I'm on day 11, and I returned to work yesterday (day 10) and it's not as bad as I thought. I am dealing with patients face-to-face, so I was worried about the death-breath since I can chew gum (I'm a braces-wearing-22-year-old) and my voice.

The bleeding hasn't really been an issue; I can say that the other night (maybe day 8 or 9) I tasted blood... but nothing actually showed up in my spit (yea, I know it's gross, but whatev) I heard it's very COMMON for a little bleeding here and there for up to 15-20 days....

Good luck!!!
